Wow. I had hoped this video would be bigger than my other ones, but I had no idea it would get picked up by the youtube algorithm to be shown in people's recommends. Having so many comments that I can't respond to them all is a new thing for me.

Just for some context, I had just barely passed 700 subscribers at the time I uploaded this video. My average view count was 150-200 per episode. I've always tried to make quality videos about games or topics that hadn't been talked about before, but as many people have pointed out in the comments the youtube search engine isn't very nice to newcomers without a promotional team behind them.

Anyways all I really wanted to say is thank you so much for the praise and positive comments, and in particular to those saying they are looking forward to more videos. There are still a lot of obscure Japanese games I'm planning on reviewing, so I do hope to keep this channel going strong.

I can't explain exactly how creepy it was discovering this game when I was 14, back in 1995. My friend and I had our own disk backup systems - I think Super Wild Card and the Multi-Game Hunter. I can't remember which one, but one of them, when you tried to run the SNES off of it without first booting a game into it, would automatically load Hong Kong 97. We couldn't understand why it was there, why it was so bad, or why it contained the bizarre, macabre images and text that it did. We had no context for its references, couldn't get far in the game, and were totally creeped out by the music. My friend, who was Chinese, was only able to tell me that the lyrics had something to do with Tienanmen Square, but at that age, we didn't even really know the significance of that - I think maybe his mom had told him that it related to TS, but I can't remember for sure. The fact that it played through EVERYTHING though, the opening credits, title screen, gamplay, death screen... it made it that much more eerie. I never forgot that audio loop. Imagine my surprise when I decided to look into it recently and found all the currently available information on it. You gotta love the internet.

Hong Kong '97 had:
1. Original plot
2. Original Story
3. Original characters
4. Original score
I'd give that game all of those things.

Hmm, interesting how a channel with less than a thousand subscribers and a video with less than thousand views ended up in my recommended feed. I hope this is not a quirk of the algorithm and I will get to see more of obscure channels with great content such as this. Good job!
