Ironically that last prayer to make king James a Cathlic worked, only it was his grandson, James II.

This reminds me of the plot to assassinate a government official by samurais from the Mito domain in the 1860s. Especially all the secret planning and plotting. Although they successfully killed the government official, many of them died during the killing or fled and met their fate after in prison. It's interesting how history, even when it is centuries apart and in a completely different country, can bear so many similarities.

Oh my god, I've neve even put thought into whether it was worse to be burned in a wet cold climate versus a hot dry one.

I've researched a lot about this subject and seen several documentaries.  This is one fo the few that doesn't try to portray the plotters as innocent or righteous victims.  It did a pretty good job of being evenhanded and just stating what actually happened and the circumstances leading up.

"...racked with pain..." Is this where the expression and verb come from? 🤔

Holbeache House is not in Stourbridge, it is between Wall Heath and Himley, several miles away. Interestingly there are sill musket balls in the front door from the skirmish.

The rack was nothing new to torture. Henry VIII, Mary I and Elizabeth I all had prisoners broken on the rack and tortured with red-hot irons. Henry VIII even had a cook boiled alive.
