Thailand’s transgender culture is one of the most talked about, misunderstood, and often sensationalized parts of the country. Most people outside Thailand only ever encounter surface-level stereotypes through nightlife districts, tourism videos, social media clips, or adult entertainment culture. But everyday transgender life in Thailand is far more human, complicated, and deeply connected to family, identity, survival, work, relationships, and social acceptance than many people realize. In this video, we spend the day wandering through a botanical garden while having an open and honest conversation about Sonia’s life story growing up transgender in Thailand. From childhood and family expectations to hormones, transition, temple life, cabaret dancing, military conscription, surgery, relationships, and eventually how we met, the discussion becomes a rare long-form look into a world that is usually reduced to headlines or stereotypes.
