A hundred years ago, a man was born whom I never had the chance to know, yet through the sound of his saxophone, he managed to enter my life so deeply.
John, I wish I could simply say thank you.
Thank you for all the times your music gave a name to emotions I could not even understand.
For all the times one of your notes reached places where words could not.
For the joy, the sorrow, the tenderness, the freedom, the sense of wonder you made me feel.
And above all, thank you for being there, without ever knowing it, in the moments when I needed you most. Your music accompanied me through difficult days, kept me company when I felt alone, and sometimes reminded me that even out of pain, something beautiful can be born.
Perhaps this is the miracle of art: someone lives, searches, suffers, loves, questions himself, and creates something so true that, many years later, it can still touch the heart of someone on the other side of the world.
And that is why, when I think of people like you, I can still believe in human beings.
Because as long as there are people capable of transforming their souls into music, and that music is capable of making someone’s life deeper, freer, and more beautiful, then perhaps the world is not lost.
A hundred years after your birth, your voice is still alive.
And it continues to change those who listen.
My life is one of them.

When someone like Coltrane left this planet nearly sixty years ago and people are still talking about him, that should tell you all you need to know. Words fail but the music always delivers.

Man they truly ascended into to something timeless here. I can’t even imagine what they were feeling in those seasons, after playback from the main board. I’m 45 now, this album found me at 18 when I went to go college, I’ll never forget hearing that upright bass followed by the piano. My face went blank-it was like nothing I had ever heard.

I know I can’t be alone, because even now I get tears in my eyes listening to this. It truly resonates inside me spiritually. As it was meant to.

I grew up listening to jazz being played by my Father at home. Coltrane, Hubbard, Babs Gonsales, Roy Haynes etc.

We all have a special aptitude, but only a few of us are fortunate enough to find it, and even fewer work and love hard enough to nurture it to an extreme level of excellence. Truly a Love Supreme. Thank you Trane. 🙏🏾
