It's not so much the RMDs that cause the anger, it's things like increased IRMAA. Sure take the taxes fine, but don't penalize me for saving.

Excellent video. I'm already at RMD age and I'm a nerd, so I'd done all the calculations before I retired. The IRMAA implications were YIKES but it's better to know. There are a lot of things about aging that people don't warn you about; IRMAA is just one of them. One of the problems is having people refer to IRAs as "tax free" accounts. Nope, just tax deferred.

I retired early and resonate heavily with Susie. Working numbers forward and back, There's just no big deal about RMDs. I can try to minimize them but it basically just means I'm moving my tax burden forward in time.

And one other thought. So what I have decided on for my planning, when attempting to “guess” what future tax brackets will be is this. Since I’m now married but none of us are promised tomorrow that means if one spouse passes away then it is a guarantee big change in your top tax bracket having to file as a single person. Thus going to convert a total of around 25-30 of 401 to Roth before I hit the RMD age to lessen those withdrawals, live off of the RMD’s min or a bit more if needed. Then hope to leave most of the Roth to children tax free.
