Montpellier, France sink..!! Heavy rain in Hérault caused severe flooding in Montpellier

Heavy rains battering the Hérault department in France on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, caused severe flooding in Montpellier. Streets and homes were inundated, cars were trapped in the floodwaters, and several people required evacuation. The Lez River was placed under a red flood alert starting at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, September 30. At 4:20 PM, the Lavalette station recorded a water level of 4.42 meters—two centimeters higher than the flood level recorded on October 7, 2014. At the same time, levels of 3.93 meters were recorded at the Montpellier-Trinquat station and 5.26 meters at the Lattes sluice gate. Over the preceding three hours, Météo France recorded peak local rainfall of 120–140 mm, such as in Prades-le-Lez (where the total reached 259 mm since the event began). Torrential rain struck the region, which had already been under a red alert for rain and flooding since the morning. According to local authorities, rainfall reached nearly 210 mm in inland areas and 70 to 80 mm in the lowlands, with 40 mm recorded in Montpellier within the last hour. An additional 50 to 100 mm of rain per hour was forecast for the eastern part of the Hérault department during the night. "River flows are showing a significant increase in discharge," the prefecture added. An orange alert was issued for the upper reaches of the Hérault and Vidourle rivers due to flood risks. Water was already observed overflowing the banks of the Lez River in Montpellier. The affected areas include the route along Avenue du Piraeus, the Domitienne–Soulas–Mares–Flahaut axis, Avenue Maurin, Rue de Montels-Eglise, and the Pont-Juvénal, Lapeyronie, and Louis Ravas districts—areas connected to the Comédie district. Hérault department firefighters have carried out numerous roadside rescues necessitated by the reckless behavior of motorists. This situation is unfolding across the Montpellier metropolitan area—including Lunel, Triadou, Combaillaux, and Saint-Gély-du-Fesc—as the year draws to a close. Bus services remain available within the Montpellier metropolitan area. At 11:45 AM, significant rainfall was recorded in Val de Londres, north of Montpellier. The town has already received 190 mm of rain, and heavy downpours continue. Meanwhile, 300 mm has been recorded in Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort, and 350 mm south of Monoblet in the Gard department. Intense thunderstorms have developed across the region. These storms are affecting Aigues-Mortes, Vauvert, and the entire length of the Vidourle River, as well as the areas near Pic Saint-Loup, Val de Londres, and Gardonnenque. The Saint-Laurent-d'Aigouze area in Gard—where an initial thunderstorm had just passed—is experiencing rapid rainfall accumulation. Over the last few hours, storms have intensified along the Montpellier–Lunel–Nîmes–Vauvert corridor. #france #flood #disaster #weather #news
