it's so funny to see all the positivity and hype people had for the Talgo Avril back in the day and now that those trains have been in service for a couple of years both passengers and rail workers alike hate them for how awful they turned out to be

Built by Siemens as part of the Velaro family, the AVE 103 entered commercial service in 2007 and has since transported travelers at up to 310 km/h on the Madrid–Barcelona corridor, with a test record topping 403.7 km/h.

Every single time I watch a video like this, I get so sad living in the U.S. We struggle to build ONE and people are so misinformed about high speed rail that many others may never get built, at least in my lifetime.

The "standard" gauge on the Iberian penisula is broad gauge, the fast trains is going on normal standard gauge 1435 mm which make it easier for train going to France which have a big net on high speed trains.

It's a great and very extensive and informative episode. YouTube has many great well researched videos but this one shows that TV still has more resources. You've covered every angle and visited every location that was relevant for this episode.
Still, a few minor corrections and a few changes that happened since it was made in 2018 :
-First of all, the S103 (a variant of the Siemens Velaro that is used on the German ICE service) is relatively new (2006) so the first high speed trains from 1991 were the S100, which is a the French TGV Atlantique and Talgo provided the S102 and S112 (the S112 is an imprived version with higher capacity and internal design improvements). The Talgo trains in the Video where the ones provided to Saudi Arabia and where built to work in the harsh desert conditions. The new train under testing is the S106 that entered service a year ago (after long delays and problems in the gauge changing models that were resolved).
-The nonstop ride between Madrid and Barcelona takes 2h30, a stop in Zaragoza adds 15 minutes (the line bypasses Saragoza and Lleida so trains stopping there divert from the line to the central station and connect to it on the other side).
-The accident mentioned was the worst in Spain's history. It was a high speed train (the S-730, which is a 250 kph train that can change gauge) but the accident did not happen on the high speed line. All high speed lines have an advanced ETCS systems (only the first line to Sevilla used a different system as ETCS one didn't exist back then but it was still a similar system - it was replaced by ETCS in January) and such an accident wouldn't have happened on that line. This was a conventional that the train used after leaving the high speed line (and change gauge). Conventional lines use a local train control system called ASFA, which was developed in the 70's. It did go through upgrades over the years but the system on the line where the accident happened had an old version of SAFA.
*Just to clear things, especially when today there are different high speed operators: AVE (for Alta Velocidad Española/Spanish high speed but AVE is also bird in Spanish) is the brand of the high speed rail service of Renfe - the national rail operator. They also operate most suburban/regional services. High speed trains includes the AVE, AVANT (a medium distance high speed service) ans Avlo (the low cost brand of Renfe).
Adif is the company that builds and maintains rail infrastructure in Spain.
-As for changes.
*Today Renfe (the national rail operator) in mot alone as due to open access there are 2 more high speed operators in Spain - OuiGo, which is owned by the French national rail operator SNCF and is the low their low cost brand and Iryo, a private company owned by Trenitalia (Italy's national operator) and two Spanish companies. There are currently around 50 trains a day in each direction.
*Since then more lines were opened and others are in advanced construction phase or partially opened \9like the line to Extremadura). The La Sagrera station is Barcelona is in advanced construction stage, regular trains runs through the lower level and after they finished test high speed trains will go through the upper level. Hopefully it will open to service in 2026/7. This project is much more than the station as it takes the trench where the trains passed, splitting neighborhoods, and covering 4km of tracks (including a new suburban rail station that already opened) with a linear park.
