There's an old story about a very famous teacher who was invited to a dinner party. When he got there he was still wearing what might be termed his working clothes; old, used, a couple of small patches. His hostess scolded him lightly and asked him to go home and change into appropriate attire. He came back in rich robes that showed his importance. And when he was offered food, he took a chicken leg and put it in his robe, saying, "eat my robe, eat." When someone asked what he was doing he said it was clear that he was not invited, his clothes were. Stories like this remind me of that story.

Once, the new ceo of a company where I was the ops manager told me to "dress to success". 2 months later he let me go, and 4 month later the key performance indexes dropped 23% for operations and 2 clients retired. It took them 2 years to recover partially and learned that operations do better with operations appropriate attire and has nothing to do with "success"
