Can Devanagari Become India’s Shared Script

English Summary Can Devanāgarī become a common script for India? This video approaches the question not as a “one nation, one script” demand, but as the possibility of a voluntary auxiliary script. India’s multilingual reality is also multiscriptal, and every script carries literature, history, identity, and collective memory. The goal, therefore, is not to replace native scripts, but to make names, texts, and languages more readable across communities. The discussion traces the historical and institutional background from the Nāgarī Pracāriṇī Sabhā to Article 351 of the Constitution and the Central Hindi Directorate. It then examines Devanāgarī’s phonetic strengths: its systematic ordering and its ability to distinguish dental and retroflex consonants, aspiration, and vowel length. Nuqtā forms, extended signs, and Unicode support expand its range, but accurate transliteration still requires language-specific rules, normalization standards, and reliable reverse conversion. Explicit use of the class-specific fifth consonants can also reduce ambiguity. Publishing practice shows how Devanāgarī transliteration can appear beside an original text and a Hindi translation, helping readers engage with sound, literary form, and meaning. The shared abugida structure of many Brāhmī-derived scripts, together with the development from ISCII to Unicode, provides a technical basis for interoperability—but merely changing fonts is not transliteration. Roman script offers global convenience, yet ordinary English spelling often blurs important Indian sound distinctions. The example of “Shashi Tharoor” shows how using English as an unavoidable intermediary may distort pronunciation that direct transliteration can preserve more faithfully. A shared auxiliary script could improve the reading of personal and place names, access to literature, digital search, cataloguing, library science, and language learning. Its legitimacy, however, depends on voluntary adoption, equal dignity for every original script, dual-script publication, transparent standards, and verifiable conversion tools. The conclusion is balanced: Devanāgarī can become a practical bridge among Indian languages—not through compulsory uniformity, but through interoperable plurality that protects India’s linguistic diversity.
