why this is the most brilliant scene in Mean Girls

Happy holidays! What are your initial thoughts on the Mean Girls musical movie that’s coming out in January??

I love how Karen is easily the happiest of the plastics, and she's the only one who isn't putting on an act. She lacks Regina's Diva behaviour, Gretchen's insecurity, and Cady's willingness to sabotage the group. What she lacks in brains, she makes up for in heart. 💖

The thing that's always stood out to me in this scene is that Cady's parents are shocked by how sexualized the dance is, and the plastics have been doing it since they were like 12 or something, JANIS choreographed it.

fun fact: this scene was filmed at my high school and every year, for the holiday assembly, 4 jock guys do the dance in tank tops and shorts lol

I also really like that they DID NOT film it as if it was sexy. The camera doesn't pan up and down their bodies or find just the right angle to see up their skirts. It's awkward, as it SHOULD be.

My favorite detail in the Brutus scene is that Gretchen's hair is smaller. Because she's spilling all the secrets.

Karen is the only plastic that's truly herself. She's just so happy existing 😂

Regina’s mom stole that scene for me lol

Gretchen definitely made up the "she doesn't even like you that much" to try to knock Cady down a peg, I think Regina was already showing a preference for Cady over the other girls, we know when she put herself in the burn book that she had a picture of her and Cady hanging out without the other 2, and I think Gretchen knew it, if anything, what Regina said was probably more like "god Gretchen you're so annoying at least Cady doesn't cry and act desperate all the time" or something like that, and Gretchen lied about it to bring Cady down.

using the scene where the football hits gretchen on her head while saying "significant blow to her social status" is DIABOLICAL

There's a really subtle moment in the dance that further illustrates the shift in power. If you look at 4:06, you can see that Regina is behind the other girls in the choreo (as in, she's a beat late), which shows how thrown off she is.

It's also interesting to see that, immediately after the dance, both Regina and Gretchen are trying to reclaim power, and both in their own way. Gretchen is eager to prove that Cady has a crush on Kevin, not because she really cares about Cady's feelings but because being the first in on someone's gossip is her source of power. Meanwhile, Regina figures out that Cady is still into Aaron (the fact that Aaron "knows" Cady hates math proves the two of them have been talking in private, and Regina knows Cady likes math), but unlike Gretchen she keeps her cards close to her chest, and then just for good measure she shuts down "fetch". Honestly, the whole scene is so incredibly well written, and even the tiniest moments hold so much characterization.
