When I give internal rewards to my 7 month old pup by saying “gooOooOD”, he looks at me with happiness and tilts his head.

1st off thanks for not hiding behind a pay wall and actually give us useful tools 👍🏽

I used hand gestures and words for sit, down and stay, not that it always works if he is distracted. He gets treats if he minds right away but if he won't stay and has to be put back in down he get one time with a treat if he responds right away but after that if he gets up again, no treats just verbal reward.

When I was training my deaf dog I taught him that his "yes" "good job" was a thumbs up. And yes, I would talk to him while training as well because it's what I was used to. I looked up a lot of hand signals for dog training when I got him, but I also incorporated some of my own. He knew everything that my hearing dogs knew (sit, down, stay, come) and he was my best learner for the heal and it was all without treats, just praise using hand signals and pets.

What I started doing when he was just a baby in training, I always said “goooood” “ goood booyy” when he’d get a treat in order to create that association with the word. Worked well for me. I do still train with treats but that’s for dedicated sessions and when out in super distracting/new environments

OMG this treat thing! My daughter has abused dog that has issues, the number of trainers that turned her down because 'he is not food motivated'. My dog has NO interest in food outside of the home, happened at less than 6 months, he's 4 now. High energy 90 lbs of muscle and I don't need the food rewards. BTW he perks up his ears every time you say' Good boy, good heel, etc' Guess it's the 'voice'.

We rarely use treats. For initial training of basic commands, yes; for all other training, and once behaviours are taught, no. Like, teaching a new puppy to "sit", that involves treats; teaching said new puppy "No!" and, "gentle" when in the rabbit house I use corrections as necessary followed by vocal encouragement and praise.

Most of our dogs are guardian breeds, so we DO encourage guests to use treats when being introduced! One of our kuvasz is particularly bull-headed, so the treats definitely help her guardian instincts to calm down enough to where she can acknowledge, "Okay, these people are NOT a threat, they are welcome friends."

Hello Tom. You have made some really good points and I, for one, will do more internal and less external rewards. I just wanted to mention, that your beef liver treats are great for dogs that don't have issues with beef. Mine has a very sensitive tummy and cannot eat beef at all. Do you have them in chicken or some other flavour? Keep up the great work, I love all your videos and I have learned and am still learning so much :)

The momentum thing is a real thing for me and my AmStaff x Lab as well, i'm 6"1, he obviously isn't, i've only adopted him 2 months ago, and he does really well but I had to teach him everything, He responds best to hand gestures I can say whatever ( I don't ) and point and he gets it

I would like to hear your thoughts on a labradoodle/ shepit mix . On training. I don't know what lines of these different breeds she is but could be working line in the poodle lab and German shepherd breeds

Im mostly treat less at this point with the exception of new behaviors or new environments with previous behaviors. Food is great for helping them to understand the behavior. It becomes a bit of a hindrance after that except every so often imo.
