Spray foam is awesome if it is done right and with the right type. There are two main types: open-cell and closed-cell. Open-cell is good for sound insulation and thermal insulation in dry areas if it is going to be used as a thermal insulation in areas where humidity tends to build especially if sealed off like attics and crawl spaces you need to use an elastomer vapor barrier over the surfaces to be sparyed as open cell as the name implies is like a sponge and will absorb water and retain it meaning anything incased in it is constantly damp if the room/area is exposed to regular humidity. This is why in the UK, insurance companies will not insure houses that have their attics insulated with spray foam, as many roofs collapsed because fly-by-night spray foam installers would sell and use the open-cell in areas that would need a vapor barrier under the foam. Closed-cell foam, by all means, is superior to open-cell foam in every way, but its cost. Closed-cell foam costs more per barrel and installation, as it takes a bit more knowledge, time, and care in the spray process, as it has a much higher exothermic reaction than open-cell foam, to the point where it could start a fire if it is sprayed on too thickly, so it takes more passes to be safely applied. Closed-cell foam has a considerably higher R-value per inch than open-cell foam. It also acts as a structural material, with how hard and solid it cures, it acts like a bonding agent for the frame it is applied to, and it does not require a vapor barrier either, as it cures water-tight.

One of the best videos I’ve seen in a while… I love that you compare, doing it yourself, and then having a pro do it… And then, comparing… It’s a great learning tool. The only thing I would do is mention how many square foot total you actually hired the professionals for… Because everybody’s project is a different size but having the price per square foot is good enough. …

Also, anybody doing themselves would definitely want to wear gloves… This stuff is very hard to get off your hands !!!

BTW,I find the best thing to remove residual stickiness from your hands is actually Gojo (the kind with pumice if you can find it) WITHOUT any water…. Then wipe off and repeat….until you get down to the point where you would only be using soap to remove the Gojo off your hands. Almost every other solvent I’ve tried doesn’t seem to do anything and soap water is the pretty much the worst… it makes getting it off with Gojo even more difficult…hence soap and water comes LAST.

Just my opinion of course. Cheers !

I paid $1200 for 2.5in closed cell foam on 300sqft. They did a great job. Its the kind of job that's worth it.

Thank you for this video. I was highly considering DIY until I watched this, on so many levels I think going with the Pros will be a good investment that will pay for itself! Thank you

Throw the tanks in your bathtub or large trashcan filled with hot water to warm them up before use. Even if house temp is low, this will help immensely
