  The New Mutants really was my favorite book because I was a teenager reading about teenagers empowering themselves without adults.

  Funniest thing about this is that is was pitched as a book for kids.<br>Coming of age stories didn&apos;t mess around back then a guess.

  Nowadays this excellent single issue would have gotten spread over five issues. Claremont wanted to have a Lesbian relationship, but, the editors crushed it. He was told no.

  I think the thing that lead to amara being sidelined so hard was that she was added to the team not that long before illyana. Illyana is a very interesting, complex character so she kind of takes the spotlight a lot, and amara didnt have time to really establish herself as a character like the original five members did.

  Amara was supposed to be the fish out of water character, someone who was living in Ancient Rome thrusted into the 20th century and had to be accustomed to its culture and technology. That didnt last too long as Illyana came on the team and once artist Bill what’s his last name came on board, he designed Illyana’s distinctive hair and she was like 7 of 9 of Voyager, or Alexis with Dynasty, took over the title. We see some of Amara’s anachronism (not knowing who Michael Jackson was and literally said she’s from Rome) in the sleepover party issue after the demon bear story but again, quickly forgotten. She’s on the team to protect her from Selene than anything else.

  I started reading new mutants during the Liefeld/xforce years, so the era before that was always jarring to me. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gone back and read the older stories and really enjoyed them. It sort of reminds me of Stranger Things if that makes sense.

  i always thought kittys bond to illyana was more like a big sister. cause like kitty and colossus are a thing and illyana is colossus baby sister.

  I love the early issues because sure it’s standard stuff but when that big swing into horror hits you it hits hard when you have read everything up to that point.

  When I first got into X-Men, it was going through its 90’s phase with all the good and bad that implies. <br><br>But it was the back issues from the 80’s that I truly loved, and New Mutants I loved the most. &nbsp;It was wild to live in the time of extreme “grim and gritty“ and looking back at the kids team book and seeing how much more nuanced, mature, and genuinely edged those stories could feel in comparison. &nbsp;<br><br>Sienkiewicz and Guice forever.

  I honestly think the Demon Bear saga deserves to be up there in terms of other famous short comic storylines like Dark Knight Returns, Days of Future Past, The Galactus Trilogy, etc. Fantastic storytelling combined with phenomenal standout art as well. <br><br>I think a lot of people just think of NM as the stuff with Cable to the beginning of X-Force, but before that it was full of really damn good stories about characters that felt so realistic. <br><br>There’s a reason that they’re one of the few non main mutant teams that can still sell like crazy, and there’s still countless untapped story potential with the characters (Rahne and Dani should absolutely be a couple by now for example)

  I loved this comic when it first came out. I felt like I was growing up with the characters. I was 14 at the time.
