At 19 I was 19 years old.
It was in '85
I'm now 59 and still couldn't come up with a part like this off the cuff.
Legend has it that the mighty LUKE used to just do this stuff on the spot.
Great lesson Steve. I can really hear the Larry in that solo.
Big Luke and Steely Dan fan from way back.
Do a Larry C vid mate!!

I discovered this many years ago when I was invited too play by a band put together by a music teacher who was teaching A level students aged 16-18 & at that time I was 8 & was building a good reputation for my rock playing!
I was taking lessons from him too learn the art of reading manuscript which was one of the best things ever!!
I have alway had good ears & he gave me the task of transcribing the rock section of the show which was a mix of ToTo,Journey,Steely Dan & a little Bon Jovi.
I stumbled on this chord cluster method & it was like finding the meaning of life!!!
No matter what I get too play over, rhis method opens every door!!!!
Great playing too!!

Fantastic on all levels (nice 335 too!!) !! Now many years ago when I was a very young lad,I was invited too join a band by a music teacher who had this band of students doing their A level's in music so they were aged between 16 & 18. I at this time was a very small 7 year old,but Richard was impressed with me because I was taking lessons from him too sharpen up my understanding of music theory & reading which I'm very good at & it's served me very well!!
But back too the thread,I was given the task too work out & transcribe the "ROCK" part of the show & this was mainly TOTO & JOURNEY songs with a bit of STEELY DAN & DEEP PURPLE so it was not simple Chuck Berry (although Chuck Berry is not simple!!) & the "CHORD CLUSTER" method really showed it's self too me when digging deep into all the material I was given too work & transcribe for all instruments which included Brass/Woodwind/Strings plus the rest of the "Rock Band" including Keyboard's,Bass,Drums & Richard's guitar parts plus mine!!!
But I've been using this method for over 40 years now & it really works with navigating anything!!!
Steve Lukather,Neal Schon,Larry Carlton & even Hank Marvin are all using this & they all sound different!! Let's not forget about Marty Friedman who really stretches this concept too & I've absorbed his way of using it & wow!!!The doors he's opened too is crazy!!
But outside of guitar the best at using "Chord Cluster's" in my opinion are the pianist's Jerry Lee Lewis, Charles Hodges (Chas & Dave) & the master's of the Hammond organ Jon Lord,Don Airy (Deep Purple) Andrew Bowen (Status Quo) & Steve Winwood (His voice is genius too!!) & this is the best way too break out of all those ruts that many get into when overthinking theory!!! Theory though is very important too understand because like Marty Friedman you can really expand on the "Chord Cluster" method & look at relative chord's & explore them & even taking a trip outside too add tension & make it even more vocal!!!
But I will say it again this is a AWSOME lesson!!!

Thank you for your inspiring lessons and for making complex concepts so easy to follow. Your teaching has significantly boosted my confidence and enthusiasm in music.
Additionally, I am very interested in analyzing the guitar solos of Luke in "Never Walk Alone" and "21st Century Blues."

His first famous solo! Steve said this solo got him MANY studio gigs. The Luke solo in Christopher Cross's "Alright" is Luke top 5.
