Why Jerry Garcia Couldn't Afford to Stop

Was the Dead’s system genuinely fair—or did equal touring pay hide the income streams that mattered most? The terrible irony is that Jerry still couldnt stop touring and it no doubt contributed to his declining health....yet he never really gave a shit about the money!

$1,000 per day in 1990. Not bad at all! Holy moly. "Garcia was the one in the studio, doing all the arrangements while Hunter wrote the lyrics." I mean that justifies the "hunter Garcia" credit to me.

The Grateful Dead story is truly astonishing, they had so much adversity, but their spirit and love could never be quenched

This is a terrific analysis. I'm a Deadhead and an economics nerd and I've thought about these issues a lot in the 3 decades since we lost Jerry, but this is piece is filled with ideas I had never considered. It all seems to check out.

When I first started my biz, I was in the process of hooking up with an agent. I had three people stop me and lead me in the right direction. Managers and agents are basically in the theft profession. On another note, I wore Garcia ties at every gig I did for at least five years. I must have had about 60 of them. I probably still have most of 'em. -MJ

I’m not a deadhead, I do enjoy and appreciate the music, so maybe a bit of an outside perspective here. What I see is that basically, Jerry wrote all the good stuff, Jerry created the recording, was the face of the band and its driving force and the foundation of its sound, and the entire operation relied on him continuing on and on when it’s clear he could have used a break that probably would have extended his life, and the rest couldn’t manage their money and get by on equal shares in the giant amount of touring revenue, something else that Jerry was the driving force behind, so they kept going and he agreed to things he didn’t want to do to keep everyone happy. Then he passes on way early, looking about 20 years older than he actually was, and it’s all gone, and then the remaining band and others get what they can out of him for the rest of their lives. Reminds me of the book The Giving Tree.

Even a commune has someone paying the bills and pulling the weight.

Sounds like the biggest issue for Jerry was the corruption and discrimination within the US "family" courts.
