Everybody remembers how incredible Donkey Kong Country looked in 1994 — but what do you think is the real reason it lasted?

Was it the graphics, the level design, the music, the characters, the secrets…or something else?

And if you played it back then, what do you remember most about seeing DKC for the first time?

I never owned an SNES, but I remember being blown away by these graphics in 1994. They kind of remind me of the graphics from Primal Rage, that arcade fighting game with dinosaurs released around the same time.

I still revisit these games because they’re sublime platformers that just happened to exist at the dusk of a primarily 2D industry.

graphics made me notice the snes version...but the gameplay.... it'll always be one of my faves. Just beat it again a few weeks ago...then beat the GBA version. both were great

Agreed with everything said. Would be cool to see your take on the other 2 sequels in the future

Without Donkey Kong, we wouldn't have King K Rool. So, for that, Donkey Kong Country is my DEFACTO top 1 SNES game of all time!

This game seems to reward momentum!

We were on the Nintendo mailing list so I remember when they sent the vhs promoting DK! If Donkey Kong is Kranky Kong son, wouldn’t that make him Donkey Kong Jr from the game of the same name? Anyway, I played the hell out of this game. It paved the way for using digitized sprites! I miss innovations in graphics! I’m pretty it’s been about 20 years since the last “wow factor“. Agree that the music is great! Yes, especially the water level. It just makes me wanna take a nap.

29:58 in my opinion that morose little star kinda stole the movie for me. My wife seemed to laugh at him the most also.

Donkey Kong Country will always have a special place in my heart. The trilogy was a hoot in itself.
P.S., The Donkey Kong Country Game Over screen always got me thinking of M.A.N.T.I.S. after the hero shut down his tech and goes to bed to recuperate.

Games r a work of immersive art. DKC paid respect and homage to its predecessor. It had good level design, fluid momentum movement mechanics, dif characters that played dif, animal buddies to change up the game play, atmospheric world building w light lore, amazing graphics, and AMAZING music and sound design in general...

DKC snes trilogy was simply magic in the context of its release date. It redefined Donkey Kong entire existence. Imo better than Mario World.
