In the 1950's Velikovsky predicted Venus would be very hot based on ancient texts describing it as "incandescent" or "fiery."

Excellent narrative of a very significant first in planetary exploration. I had known of the 16 missions to Venus and the later first photograph of the surface. This presentation fleshes out the significance of the exploration quite a bit. Thank you.

This music is killing me. It’s like a Lifetime channel movie or something.

From the deep-space radio-telescope center near Yevpatoria, on the Crimean peninsula of the USSR. This facility was equivalent to a US radio telescope, the Goldstone Deep Space Network station in the Mojave Desert, in Southern California. I am old enough to remember a time when science fiction stories would depict the planet Venus as a water world with breathable air, tropical jungles, river bayous, and fetid swamps. The Soviet designers couldn’t have known any of the unpleasant truths until after the early probes had failed. One can’t help but wonder what would have happened if the Planet Venus had turned out to be an earthlike world in reality? What would the Cold War Space Race have been like if that had been the reality?

Despite the political tensions, there was amazing science done in that era.

Venus exploration was a Soviet imperative as it was a Russian who discovered Venus had an atmosphere. Mikhail Lomonosov, 1761.

If you don't seal the container and instead just allow the pressure to balance, you don't need any of that armor.<br>It's probably easier to get instrumentation to work at high temperature than it is to BOTH that AND fight the stresses from the temperature and pressure.

I like how none of the visuals has anything to do with Venus, then randomly on topic graphs thrown in.

One of the big proposals for a Venus mission is a pressure computer. Instead of electricity through heat-sensitive ICs, instead it's pressurized gas through an intricate manifold to move valves in order to act as transistors.

The Soviet scientists were incredibly skilled.
