قصة قارون كما لم تسمعها من قبل… النهاية التي لم تنقذه منها كنوزه

The story of Qarun is not simply the story of a man who possessed immense treasures and then God caused the earth to swallow him up. The story presented in the Quran is much deeper: how blessings can become a test, and how wealth, when combined with transgression, arrogance, and ostentation, can change a person and even alter the way society views success, happiness, and value. In this documentary, we revisit the story of Qarun in the Quran, specifically the verses in Surah Al-Qasas, to trace the story from its beginning: “Indeed, Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he transgressed against them.” How could Qarun’s treasures be so vast that even the keys to them weighed down a group of strong men? And what did he mean when he replied to his people, saying: “I was only given it because of knowledge I possess”? Then we come to one of the most thought-provoking moments in the story of Qarun: “So he went out to his people in his finery.” When some people saw his wealth and status, they said, “Oh, if only we had what Qarun has been given! Indeed, he is truly fortunate.” But only a short time later, after God caused the earth to swallow up Qarun and his house, the words of those same people changed completely: “Had it not been for God’s favor upon us, He would have caused the earth to swallow us up.” How did what they had longed for yesterday become something they now realized was a blessing from God that they did not possess? This is the question this documentary attempts to answer. We will examine the story of Qarun with Moses (peace be upon him), Qarun's treasures, the meaning of "I was given it only because of knowledge I possess," his appearance before his people in his finery, the stance of those who were given knowledge, and then the earth swallowing Qarun up and the end of his story as presented in the Quran. We will also consider the idea that immediately follows the story of Qarun in Surah Al-Qasas: "That is the home of the Hereafter, which We assign to those who do not desire exaltation upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous." The story of Qarun is not a rejection of wealth or riches, but rather a story about transgression, arrogance, being deluded by blessings, the allure of appearances, and the difference between what we see in the lives of others and the truth that only becomes clear when the story is complete.
