  I tried for many years to find my place with God and religion.  I studied world religions at a university and took courses on Christianity. What I read didn't make sense to me.  I found myself being critical and saying out loud "this is bullshit".  I later found Sam's book "The End of Faith".  Read it twice.  Sam does make sense to me and I love to hear what he has to say.  Nice interview.

  To claim to 'Believe' in any religion can take  barely a second of thought. To study nature,  science, tto think critically and rationally fills up a whole lifetime.

  Sam says the stuff I’m thinking but can’t express. I like that he’s never rude and speaks calmly. It’s like the sound of  gentle breeze rustling leaves in a forest. So natural and real.

  Confucianism is an example of an ancient ideology that helped to build and maintain social harmony,<br>without having to appeal to the &quot;supernatural&quot;.<br>In fact, Confucius himself advised:<br>&quot;the sage will not discuss weird powers or random spirits&quot; (子不语怪力乱神）<br>&quot;respect the ghosts and spirits but stay distant from them&quot; (敬鬼神而远之)<br>In other words, humans can and should take care of themselves <br>and not rely on unseen powers.<br><br>A later Confucian sage, Mencius, pointed out the natural basis of human morality: <br>The fact that you feel bad when a fellow creature suffers, is the reason why you can be a moral human being.<br>(I forgot the exact quote for this)<br>Mencius lived 3400 years ago. <br>So for millennia, there are already influential people who know, teach, and make happen,<br>the kind of &quot;better alternative to religion&quot; being discussed in the initial part of the video.<br><br>Mounk&apos;s remark that he finds it hard to imagine that alternative in the earlier history of mankind<br>is perhaps due to his limited knowledge of world history,<br>i.e. he&apos;s only familiar with the history of the West, in which it seems that every social development has been entangled with religion until modern times.

  I love Sam’s generosity of time . His clarity of thought ability to articulate it but also reference it to common sense and relatable other analogies ! He is always so refreshing !!!
