i can understand the opinion that Guardian monsters make the series feel less grounded but this is also the same line of games where there's jet plane dragons, flying telepathic dragons, and giant mantises that make and control mechs. honestly artificial monsters seem more grounded than the examples I just listed. Monster hunter, to me, has always had a mix of the grounded and the insane but I feel like you're gonna have to suspend your disbelief quite a bit. it's still a fantasy world after all.

The fact that they just did Fatalis but artificial is insane. And it combined all three Fatalis too. With the flames of black, the meteors of red, and the lightning of white.

As someone who has fought Worlds Fatalis for nearly a weak straight until I could solo him, THE WEEK BEFORE Wilds released, arriving at this boss only to be faced with the very same moves I've grown so, so used to was...... AMAZING! The fact that he combines all black dragons is just insane

I still remember the shock that shot through my body when I recognized that downward flamethrower attack, they really cooked with the insanity of this final boss. It really matched ahtal kas freak.

I dunno, personally I think "people cloned animals" is still a hell of a lot more grounded than "dragon with jet engines for fingers expending more energy on a single day trip than it could reasonably muster over the course of 3 months," but we've all had this conversation already.

Another added detail; once you reach HR50 and get to slay the high rank Zoh Shia, the hunter units have dialoge wondering how it could have possibly come back to life. After completing the quest, it is discovered Zoh Shia can regen from a single piece of it's body left intact, similar to Cell from DBZ. And from MH lore, we know Fatalis is also able to do this. In one of the old games there's a special mining spot, an ancient weapon that can be mined for parts. The village elder will reveal that is actually an old Fatalis weapon, trying to grow back it's full body. The weapon is mined to slow down it's resurrection.

An interesting note about the "canon" status of the Equal Dragon Weapon: A lot of the series lore and art books are written from the perspective of in-universe ecologiests and historians, with concept art framed as a depiction of the extinct ancestor of existing monsters, or in the case of concepts like the EDW a legend that's been passed down in various parts of the world. From that perspective the EDW has been "canon" as a story passed down from generation to generation in-universe, that we can now say was likely influenced by the history of Zoh Shia and Wyveria's other creations. It's a fun approach to presenting unused concepts in a way that still gives them grounding in the lore, keeping them loosely relevant until such time that the devs decide to revisit them in earnest.

that line where the palico and hunter commented about Zo Shia, seemingly similar to Fatalis gives a further background for our hunter not being only a veteran hunter but probably a veteran who faced a black dragon before (we all know how legendary and very dangerous black dragons are) and possibly slayed one.

The way World and Wilds handle the idea of the player's experience is really interesting in its own right. You're actually not a newcomer in World; in both games you're an experienced Hunter in a new locale, allowing you to both feel competent and get a sense of novelty. The fact that some of the "new" Wilds monsters are referred to as if they're already known, and that the Hunter has a vague past involving fighting giant powerful monsters, adds to this.

Honestly I love the Guardians. Not only are they a smart way to remix monsters, but allow favorites to come back in a way that's actually interesting rather than just "Yeah yeah here's Odogaron go away". Even though it's a rather odd assemblage of monsters, they all feel cohesive in Wyveria thanks to the color schemes and the Wylk crystal mechanics they all use (introducing the player to a mechanic that Zoh Shia really wants you to use).

But, all of that is just icing on the cake for the thematic importance of the Guardians. This "respect for nature" theme is something we've seen before obviously, but this feels like the climax of that. And not just in how the Guardians turned on their creators, but in how Guardian Arkveld finds a way to revert to a natural existence or how Xu Wu has adapted itself to somehow feed off of the artifical Guardians.

I totally get not liking them, I was put off at first too. The more I played though, the more they just felt right... at least for this game. I hope we get more in the future, as it's a wonderful way to bring back monsters that simply wouldn't fit outside of the environments they were created for.

i find it a bit strange that people think that artificial monsters make the setting less grounded when there have been implications across most of the games that there was some kind of super powerful ancient civilization
