You are spot on with the single female voice it was Moses's mother singing.

Deliver Us is a the opening song to "The Prince Of Egypt," (DreamWorks version of the Moses story) the song is being sung by the slaves it starts with the men singing about their struggles and suffering and the women are singing Mose's mothers part as she rushes to save her son, this song is being played during the part of the story when the Egyptians were being sent to kill all the newborns.

This is the Biblical story of Moses. There's a new stage version but it doesn't hold a candle to the original animated version. It was written for just what you describe: Ofra Haza doing an amazing, soaring soprano over the choir, absolutely spine tingling. See if you can find that version. And there's a video of "(Look at Your Life) Through Heaven's Eyes" with the incredible Brian Stokes Mitchell backed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. They both "crush"! Don't miss that one - the delight on the choirs' faces, the way Mitchell interacts with them, even members of the audience singing along, it's pure magic - an experience, not just a song.
