A parallel hydraulic circuit for all leg pistons can assure that all legs experience the same force as the ship settles it&apos;s weight on them. Shared hydraulic accumulators absorb displacement motion from the leg pistons. The guidance computer dynamically selects an accumulator with the most appropriate volume (and preload pressure) to bring the ship to a halt depending upon the momentary descent velocity and deceleration. Thus, the ring of descent thrusters are not the only control mechanism for touchdown. The extension clamps are not the sole means of immobilizing the legs, as shutoff valves for each accumulator and leg piston provide redundancy.<br><br>The great advantage of a shared hydraulic circuit is analog reaction speed, simplicity, and robustness. A downside is if the hydraulic fluid temperature reaches the boiling or freezing point.

  So once they use the lander to get back up to Orion for the trip back to earth...why not send the lander back down to the surface empty now and re-land and you have a base already there for the next crew or if a way could be found to have it go back down only this time have it touch down flat on its side lets say, you would have a base &quot;Tube&quot; flat on the surface for future housing maybe then using robots to cover in regolith adding more radiation protection

  Regarding coming home. Put the heatschild on in the upper atmosphere like a jacket and the legs can be built into the frame 20m long X 6/7 or 8 of them. This is the one way rocket...

  What if the Starship was deliberately sent tumbling end over end upon re-entry, and in doing so no one part of the Starship was exposed for to long to the friction outside. Would this work and if it did would any heat shield tiles be needed? The crew could move to a gyroscopic compartment in the centre of the ship so they do not become disorientated until the ship levels out.
