The problem with Spawn is that the story went nowhere.

The biggest waste of potential was HBO not renewing the show for season 4 and leaving it on a cliffhanger

A great way make Spawn relevant to today's audience is to focus on his connection to the homeless community. Very few stories have them as real characters or have the main character around them consistently.

Well, if I synthesize every single interview I read from Todd, this would be it: “Spawn is the most powerful character of the Image universe (that’s what kids want)” but Todd, the character needs a weakness- “well, he is the most powerful but has a limited quantity of power” and then? “The devil gets his soul” oh, Faustian but go- “but then he’ll lead the Devil’s army” but, if he came back for love, why the devil is interested in a guy who is obviously a good guy “because he is the best soldier ever and kids want dark, cool stuff” but did he do bad stuff he regrets as a soldier? “No, he is a patriot, a good guy and I’ll draw cooler weapons than Rob” - yeah, you get the drift. Todd has never lifted a book with no pictures in his life, and apparently didn’t absorb anything from the writers he collaborated during his Marvel years.

On the other hand, Mignola had an idea but for better definition got John Byrne to write the first issues, then he went on his own wearing his influences on the sleeve: Lovecraft, Chambers, Pierce…

I respect Todd and Rob Liefeld: it’s hard to accomplish that much with so little

Why so many people want movies rather than TV shows might also be a generational thing. Todd and many others grew up in a time where TV was not considered anything more than "cheap" entertainment. It wasn't until HBO started creating premium TV content in the late 90s, early 2000s when that trend started (just started) to change.

I remember one time in 2019 when I worked at a Halloween store where I was in charge of the changing rooms. This kid who was like maybe 10 asked if we had any costume for Spawn. That was pretty cool to me and led to finding Kayfabe. Shout out's to Spawn and that 10 year old kid!

Hellboy could easily be a brand daring nowadays but MM wanted to finish his story first, over nearly 30 years he carefully made sure the book reached a conclusion he wanted, and he still does spin-offs, Todd has bigger aspirations and he is definitely more successful, so who knows, maybe they both got what they wanted

I can't pretend to know how Todd McFarlane feels about his own creation, but I was in middle school in the late 90s and it seems like he could have turned Spawn into a cash cow by now while still retaining control of its quality. Lord knows it worked for JK Rowling.
