The Secret Rule That Makes Kitchens Feel Bigger

I ordered deep, wide drawers instead of standard base or slider cabinets in 1998 (hadn't seen them anywhere else until years later), and it was the 2nd best decision I made. Single action instead of opening door wide & then sliding shelf out. First was raising most counters about the 36" standard (tall family).
What I hate about those pull down sprayer faucets is waiting for the water temperature to change because of the long hose below the counter. Finally found one in a restaurant style that changes quickly. Doesn't look great, but long enough and very functional.

@8:41 My kitchen was remodeled in 1969, and i love it just the way it is!

The functional floor space in the cooking area is about 8' X 14', surrounded on three sides by the lower cabinets, with the upper cabinets in an "L," along two walls, and there is an isthmus between the cooking area and the eating area or "nook," which is also 8' X 14,' and big enough to put a table for six.

I think my realtor thought that i was going to "modernize" it, but really don't see how it can be improved. I looked at it; wondering if I should put in an island, but it would have to be tiny, and it seems that it would just be in the way. I do have a small chest freezer, next to the fridge, and pushed that into the space where an island would go, and figured that if i wanted to, I could get some kind of a serving cart about that size, and put the same countertop material on top of it, but have it on wheels. That way, it could serve as an extra work area, if needed, and roll back along the wall when not in use, but I have yet to encounter a situation where it would be needed. A family could carve a whole line of Halloween pumpkins on that isthmus!

The 8' long isthmus, (which is opposite the sink), provides plenty of counter space for two cooks to work without bumping into each other, separates the cooking area from the eating area, and is a perfect place to set up extra dishes, "buffet style," within easy reach for holiday meals with guests.

I decided that the people who designed it, in the late 60's, knew exactly what they were doing, and came up with the best possible layout, to begin with. Some of my neighbors have also been over, and they always comment on how nice and spacious my kitchen is. It's retro as heck, but as far as I'm concerned, it's perfect! ❤

400 sq feet is a HUGE kitchen. That's almost my entire downstairs.

I think the size of the kitchen matters. I hate my kitchen. It's the size of my sister's Master bedroom closet and I call it the bottomless pit because it's so dark. Dark cabinets, dark wood floor. Drop something you need a flashlight to find it during the day. it's circa 1982.
