Chemistry is called chemistry for a reason - you only get a reaction when it’s the right chemicals. And not from the same two.

Writing banter without chemistry just leads you to the awkward situation where you have a room full of characters and none of them seem to like each other.

1. Two sides of the same coin: they have something in common that connects them, then they also have aspects that are opposites
2. Complements: one character's weakness is saved by the other character and vice versa
3. Fight for status: power dynamics, witty back and forth banter, etc.

I think chemistry comes down to the actors. A writer can write their damndest, but if the actors aren't gelling, there's nothing to be done about it.

I watched Deadpool and Wolverine in theatres with a few buddies and it was honestly one of the most fun experiences I’ve had this year

I think you’ve sorely forgotten the best source of fictional chemistry. The comedic best friends where there is ZERO tension and they’re almost EXACTLY the same. This includes Troy and Abed, Bill and Ted, etc. Of course there are small differences but they’re often treated as a single conglomerate of a character

I cannot properly express the joy I felt when you mentioned Aziraphale and Crowley

Deadpool & Wolverine was a pretty average movie in a lot of ways imo, but it was unadulterated FUN! Something that is in short supply these days! I totally get why it was so popular

Captain Jack Sparrow & Hector Barbossa's relationship is just amazing yet so unappreciated by most people.
