A man who lost an arm after being told "You go too" on the battlefield
fell children all over Japan into a frenzy of yokai (supernatural creatures).
His name was Shigeru Mizuki.
Who exactly was Shigeru Mizuki?
He was the leading figure in yokai manga, creating GeGeGe no Kitaro, Medama Oyaji, and Nezumi Otoko.
This is the story of the untold life of a great man who lived through the turbulent Showa era.
A boy nicknamed "GeGe," who was not good at speaking or studying,
grew up hearing stories of the invisible world from his grandmother, Nonnonba.
He eventually aspired to become an artist, but was drafted into the war and sent to the front lines on the southern island of New Britain.
There, he witnessed a living hell where his comrades fell more from hunger and disease than from bullets.
Asa Losing his left arm without even getting drunk, he finally returned to his hometown only to be met with bottomless poverty.
Days spent pawning, the stacks of pawn tickets growing to three centimeters, yet he never put down his pen.
"The Ghost Family" didn't sell, even the title was changed without his consent, and he made his debut at the far too late age of 35.
All he wanted to draw was the world of yokai he had seen with Nonnonba.
However, with "Akuma-kun" and "GeGeGe no Kitaro," the times finally caught up, and a yokai boom arrived.
Helped by Nezumi Otoko, he continued to draw many times more than others with just one arm, and Sakaiminato became a land of yokai.
"GeGeGe no Nyobo" enveloped mornings all across Japan, and the number of bronze statues he left behind increased to 178.
Even so, behind the scenes of making all of Japan laugh, Mizuki was alone, that He continued to depict the battlefield.
"All Hands to the Death!" embodied the lingering guilt of those who survived.
He never let go of the question of why he alone survived throughout his life.
