Pennsylvania coal region here. Its disgusting what those companies were allowed to get away with. Here luckily we have very good water, drinking water that is, our local creeks have been polluted beyond belief but our mountainous terrain allows us to have clean drinking water. It blows my mind that this company was allowed to inject slurry back into mines, whoever allowed this knew what was going to eventually happen. We use a few things here that is making things less poluted and miners and other coal workers be safe. First is we have the United mine workers union. They would never have allowed anyone be fired because of safety or health concerns. Our govt has passed laws that required mining companies to leave the land better than it was before. Many stripping pits had to be filled and companies that mined them footed the bill. We also have co generation plants that burn the left over from coal processing to covert to energy and the flyash left is made safe to be able to use in fill for landfills or filling in the abandoned mines and stripping pits. We have also have been installing settling ponds to filter out the heavy metal and sulfur runoff into our creeks and it is working because areas of the creek that were orange like the Orange from the processing plant on the video now have fish and wildlife starting to move back in. I dont know if any of this will help but it is what we are doing here. I live in mount carmel and anyone interested in this topic should take a look at our neighbor town Centralia the coal started on fire underground and basically burned the community out of their homes.

I grew up in packsville (near whitesville and 2 miles down the road from the UBB disaster. Massey energy known there as Marfork mine destroyed our well water this was in 97-98. But Massey went under so karma got them in the end.

For those who care to know there's also the documentary 'Blood on the Mountain'. Same topic and it goes to show that a lot of elements within big industry are downright abusive, powerhungry, exploitive sociopaths or even worse. I wish there'd be laws against such creatures functioning in capacities where they have influence over the quality of other people's lives. That simple.

~ 1:00:00 2007 was about the highest use of coal in the US, and what we were told at about this point, about 50%, was just about right—% of electric power from coal. But by 2023 it was down to about 16%. In another decade or two, we may be where the UK is now, which is just about coal-free. The writing is on the wall.
