  They can’t answer the questions….how are they going to defend the thousands of miles of Scottish coastline.  What currency will we use.  Who pays for Scottish armed forces.  We could fire up the old spitfire in Kelvingrove Gallery for an air force.  I hate to be flippant but the last time a Scottish army got a result was Bannockburn.  The SNP are living in cloud cuckoo land.  Defence isn’t cheap.  We can always raise taxes to pay for it like they did for the extra penny on the pound a number of years ago to pay for education.  Another lie.  Education is a mess so where did the money go?  Are the Scottish people so gullible as to listen to these fools.

  John Swinney: Your Rules, John. I’m Just Applying Them to You <br>John Swinney has no concept of leadership, much less what it means to be First Minister of Scotland. <br>A leader doesn&apos;t have to agree with everyone he represents. He can attack Reform&apos;s policies as hard as he likes. That&apos;s politics. <br>But hundreds of thousands of Scots voted Reform. I&apos;m one of them. <br>Swinney has repeatedly chosen contempt over persuasion. He talks about Reform and the people supporting it as though we&apos;re something beneath respectable Scottish politics. <br>Fine, John. If contempt is the political language you&apos;ve chosen, don&apos;t complain when it&apos;s returned. <br>I have nothing but contempt for you as a political leader. <br>Not because you disagree with me. I expect politicians to disagree with me. I despise your attitude because you seem incapable of understanding one of the most basic obligations of leadership: you govern a country containing millions of people who don&apos;t think like you. <br>Those Reform voters are Scottish citizens. Their votes have exactly the same democratic value as votes cast for the SNP. They don&apos;t require your approval, your blessing or your permission. <br>And neither do I. <br>Then there&apos;s your independence mandate. <br>You point to 73 SNP and Green MSPs and tell Scotland that this represents the largest pro-independence majority ever elected to Holyrood and provides a mandate for another independence referendum. <br>Fine. <br>I&apos;ll use the same election. <br>On the nationwide regional ballot, the SNP received 27.2% and the Greens 14.0%. <br>Combined: 41.2%. <br>Everybody else combined: 58.8%. <br>That doesn&apos;t mean every person in the 58.8% necessarily opposes independence. It wasn&apos;t a referendum. <br>But that&apos;s precisely the point. <br>You chose the election as evidence of Scotland&apos;s position on independence. <br>If the 73 seats tell us what Scotland thinks about independence, then the votes that created those seats matter as well. <br>If 41.2% against 58.8% cannot legitimately be described as a proxy referendum result, neither can 73 parliamentary seats. <br>You cannot turn an election into a referendum when the seats suit you and turn it back into an ordinary parliamentary election when somebody counts the voters. <br>Your rule, John. <br>I&apos;m just applying it to you. <br>Then there is your record. <br>The SNP has governed Scotland since 2007. <br>Scotland&apos;s education system was once something Scots could boast about. The latest PISA results put Scotland at 491 in science, 488 in reading and 467 in mathematics. The longer-term trend is considerably less flattering than describing the latest results as simply “stable”. <br>After nearly two decades in government, responsibility eventually has to land somewhere. <br>Then there are Scotland&apos;s public finances. <br>The latest GERS figures put Scottish public-sector revenue at about £98.3 billion and expenditure for Scotland at about £123.6 billion, producing a notional fiscal balance of approximately minus £25.3 billion, or 10.9% of GDP, under the present constitutional arrangements. <br>GERS isn&apos;t the budget of an independent Scotland. <br>But £25 billion doesn&apos;t disappear because Scotland becomes independent. <br>If you&apos;re asking Scots to support independence, show them the books. <br>What comes in? <br>What goes out? <br>What currency will Scotland use? <br>What debt will it inherit? <br>At what interest rate will it borrow? <br>What taxes change? <br>What spending changes? <br>How long does your plan take to reach a sustainable position? <br>Scotland doesn&apos;t get an exemption from arithmetic because somebody waves a Saltire. <br>Then there&apos;s the independence referendum fund. <br>The SNP raised roughly £667,000 from independence supporters through appeals in which donors were told their money would be ring-fenced for a future independence referendum. <br>The money was subsequently spent on SNP activities, with Swinney arguing that those activities supported the objective of independence. <br>People who donated that money can decide for themselves whether that&apos;s what they understood “ring-fenced” to mean. <br>Then there&apos;s Peter Murrell. <br>The SNP&apos;s former chief executive pleaded guilty to embezzling £400,310.65 from the party over a period extending from 2010 to 2022 and was sentenced to five years and three months in prison. <br>His crime is his responsibility. <br>But voters are entitled to ask what it says about the governance and financial controls of a political organisation when its chief executive can embezzle more than £400,000 over more than a decade. <br>Then there&apos;s the Scottish Government&apos;s handling of the allegations against Alex Salmond. <br>The government conceded that its process had been unlawful and procedurally unfair, with the court recording that it was tainted by apparent bias. <br>The Scottish Government subsequently paid £512,250 towards Salmond&apos;s legal costs. <br>A Holyrood committee later described the government&apos;s handling of the affair as seriously flawed. <br>Those aren&apos;t insults. <br>They&apos;re part of the record. <br>And then we return to leadership. <br>Swinney is perfectly entitled to disagree with Reform. <br>He is entitled to attack Reform&apos;s policies. <br>He is entitled to argue that Reform would be disastrous for Scotland. <br>But Reform went from no MSPs to 17 in the 2026 Scottish election and finished joint second with Labour. <br>Scottish voters put those MSPs there. <br>Those voters don&apos;t require John Swinney&apos;s permission to participate in Scottish democracy. <br>When the First Minister chooses contempt for those voters rather than arguing against their politics, I judge him accordingly. <br>I am one of those voters. <br>So if contempt is the standard John Swinney has chosen, I am perfectly capable of returning it. <br>I don&apos;t regard him as a leader. <br>I don&apos;t regard him as somebody capable of representing Scotland as a whole. <br>I regard him as a waste of space in the office he occupies. <br>And I&apos;ll judge his arguments by exactly the standards he chooses to apply to everybody else. <br>His words. <br>His record. <br>His figures. <br>His rules. <br>I&apos;m just applying them to him.
