"Hypnotize" is a call to wake up from the "hypnosis" of the mass media and see the true face of war and political control.

The song heightens the contrast between global catastrophes (wars, repressions) and the private life of the average person, who prefers to remain in his or her “bubble,” ignoring what is happening around them.

Daron Malakian explained that it's about giving a voice to those who actually experienced Tiananmen Square, rather than expecting celebrities to speak for them.

If you end up bored and curious one night the tiananmen square massacre has some very famous images like tank man who stood alone in front of a fully armoured tank just fed up with it all. Its a very powerful image and china tried very hard to not have the image go global. Tank man is an inspiration. No one fully knows what happened to him after he waa dragged away but we all know sadly.

I do find it mind-boggling how many reactors don't know about the Tiananmen Square Massacre. Yes the army moved in with tanks and infantry and killed or arrested everyone in the square. There was an American reporter that smuggled out film depicting the infamous "Tiananmen Tank Man" which was just a guy walking home with groceries standing in front of a Tank yelling at the crew that they should be ashamed of themselves, they eventually ran him down. I took the lyric "was fashion the reason why they were there" a nod to all the social media influencers depicting all the youth care about is fashion and luxury. Hence why so many have never heard of Tiananmen Square I guess.
