Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death by hanging because the severity and scale of the crimes against humanity for which he was tried, as well as the legal framework of the Iraqi High Tribunal.<br><br>Key reasons and context for the ruling:<br><br>The Dujail Massacre (1982)<br>The trial that resulted in the death sentence (November 5, 2006) focused on events in the town of Dujail. Following a failed assassination attempt against Saddam in 1982, his regime carried out mass reprisals against the local population:<br><br>- 148 Shia men and boys were executed.<br><br>- Hundreds of residents were tortured and unlawfully imprisoned.<br>- Entire family homes and agricultural lands were destroyed.<br><br>The court classified these actions as a systematic and widespread attack on a civilian population - a crime against humanity.
