He mentions an awfully big to kite lift up all that coax. I would think they would have it the other way around where the transformer and coax is on the ground or near the ground, and the other end of the wire is being supported vertically by the kite.

Dave, I don't usually comment on your videos but your lead in statement really got me. You said it would have to be a really large kite to hold up the coax. It's holding the wire. The transformer and coax would be at the bottom. The rest of your answer was good and no further comment is needed. A radial wire to bleed off the static electricity/RF would work fine in my opinion.
Steve, k7ofg.

I've picked up static off an ADSB antenna. An antenna doesn't need to be big to get static!

Yes! - I'd love to see that too! - Cheers!

Always a good idea to ground an antenna before handling it.
The shock may be enough of a distraction to cause a fall. N0QFT

A kite such as a parafoil used at the beach in a typical beach wind exerts an amazing amount of force. I have a parafoil kite about 3 by 4 feet in size. It elevates my arm up in the air above my head and I have to lean back to resist the pull.

    Dave,
During ww2 all the bomber aircraft carried a life raft, rations, water and a rescue transmitter known as The Gibson 4:37 Girl. It was a hand crank transmitter and had a non insulated antenna wire. The antenna wire was sent into the air by means of a helium balloon , and the raft had a small cylinder of helium to fill the balloon, or there was a box kite with aluminum tube frame you would put together, not sure what the rest of the kits was maybe parachute material. The antenna is 300 ft long, you would hold it between your knees and crank the generator and it would send a SOS or it had a optional Morse code key to send a massage. I have a roll of that antenna wire, it is a braided copper wire smaller than kite string.
There is no visible means to eliminate static from that antenna wire, unless it is internal.
Any idea how they eliminated static from that between your knees in a life raft?
Thanks for your thoughts. Enjoy your videos
Jeff
KI5HGT

What about a static wick like aircraft use? They are quite lightweight.

Instead of bleeder resistor I would ad coil to the ground. Big enough to block RF but for DC will be short to the ground
