Nice to see cast iron replaced with cast iron rather than PVC. Also don't blame the old guy for keeping the boiler if it works.. if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Great video Steven! I wish I would have seen this video a year ago. We had to do a job just like that, but with 10 inch cast iron pipe and it was 20 feet in the air! It was a roof drain for a mall. That was my FIRST plumbing job and we didn't know how to cut the pipe or how to put the pieces together! This video would have helped a bunch! Awesome tools you have for cutting, I've never seen anything like that! And your service truck is BEAST!!!! You have so much stuff in there. I bet you hardly ever run to the parts house haha. Great video!

Love the sound those chain breakers make when they complete the cut.

I don't hammer on old cast-iron any more, one 3 hour job turned into a whole day job with most of the time on my own time, I was trying to hammer off a joint just like you were, and the pipe broke off inside the solid rock walk, had to jack hammer the wall open dig out the dirt and get a grinder in there to cut a clean cut, install the couplers and ABS pipe, you cant get cast-iron here any more, then pack the dirt back in and cement the well all back together, had this been a commercial building and the pipe pasted into another space, the a copper pipe would have to be installed though the wall, as a fire stop, then go with ABS once 8 inch's out from the wall... never again will I hammer on old cast

Oh man, connecting to old cast iron is tough. Sometimes she just keeps splitting every place you try to cut it. And you know it's only a matter of time before you're back working on the piece right next to the new pipe :/ 3 stories and smaller we can use PVC or ABS here. 4 stories or bigger we're still stuck with the old cast iron

I have about 3 years of experience in plumbing and heading into my fourth year this spring . I really enjoy the videos you post and I always skim through every video you have . Been working by myself under my license plumber for a year and a couple months .. thank you for showing me how you fix leaks because I know from experience that I would have done the exact way you did .

surprised to see you use a snap chain on old cast-iron. We won't even go next to old cast with a snap chain. grinders with abrasive blades only! love your videos. Keep up the good work.

interior plumbing must have been installed after this house was built and you're right, that thickness of cast iron is a joke! haha. i'm surprised it didn't split earlier. i have the original cast iron stacks in my 1946 home and the walls are insanely thick and surprisingly in excellent shape. they'll prob last another 100+ years for all i know.

any home built with interior plumbing won't have those horizontal runs of cast iron. they'll have multiple stacks with the tie ins under ground and not floating in the air in the basement. i see the same thing in those 1800's farm houses and early 1900's stone and brick colonials in philadelphia, where plumbing was added in once it became affordable, prior to that people used outhouses in their backyard lol. you can see the distinct different with plumbing with the homes built in the 1930's on up

Great video Steven. I'm currently in a pre-apprenticeship program in Toronto, Canada and we're working on a cast iron rough-in for multiple fixtures leading into a single soil stack. This video has helped quite a bit. Appreciate it!
