Although it's a different geographical area entirely, this is NOT a thing that only happens in the south, in hollers, or in largely uneducated areas. Many people aren't aware of it, but there are communities just like this in New Jersey. Many people think all of NJ is what you see on the Sopranos, or Jersey Shore; but there are places in northern NJ where it would be just as dangerous, and people would find the inhabitants very unwelcoming.

The old term for this enclave was the Jackson whites. In the last 30 years or so, they have rebranded themselves as Ramapo Indians or Ramapo mountain people. Before all of this technology and before Route 23 was connected in that area, it was only reachable by very rural, winding roads treacherous, especially in winter. During earlier years, people venturing into that area by accident, were usually met by armed residents and escorted off of the property. My uncle did his Master's thesis on this group in the 1960s, when there were more urban legends than facts around them.

Forty years ago, I had an employee who was of this clan. Although she had no birth defects, she indicated that deafness, speech ability, and albinism were very common. They are a mix of Dutch, Native American, and black, and there were two families intertwined exactly like this video. I'm not going to list the surnames or exact location out of respect for her; also because they now seem to marry outside the clan, have rebranded to stress only their Native American ancestry, and consider the name Jackson White as a pejorative.

I'm writing all of this because as a northerner myself, I know many people think this kind of thing only happens in the south ( like Jeff Foxworthy says , if your family tree is a circle). It happens in NJ, in Canada, and where the Bounty landed after the mutiny.

This should be a crime against humanity. I can never agree with what will only cause the extinction of our species.

As a care worker for people with special needs the viral spread of the Whittakers is the very reason why things like HIPPA exist.

If it wasn't for Mark nobody would know them. They wouldn't have received the money, he was God sent to them. I wish them all the best. I have a feeling some if not all of of them miss him.

You have talent with words. Your ability to seperate connotation and denotation in a way few can. When I first. heard of the Whitakers online and told people about them I made them sound like a side show even though that was not my intention. They were simply fascinating, Its a shame their story online ended the way it did but I have a hard time being too upset or negative about it. I dont understand their lives so who am I. I went to U of Kentucky and went to the eastern hills with a friend to a holler no different than that of the Whitakers. I was told about the Fugates by a Fugate. Not a blue Fugate but a Fugate nonetheless and mimiced the Whitakers in many ways, I thought about that visit to eastern Kentucky immidiately when I first saw the Whitakers.

Mark cared about them. Eric & Patrick exploited them and made money off them. They stoled money that was supposed to go to the family. They did all for likes and content and money. They are responsible for the family being broken up. It's truly sad and they both belong in prison.

Anyone else wondering if the town was named after the family was set up there or if it’s one heck of a coincidence
