Senior travel creator Choi Su-gil, who started a new life traveling the world after retirement. Join him on a journey to Azerbaijan, the land of eternally burning flames. We take our first steps in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan and the largest city in the Caucasus region. The Flame Towers are a landmark of Baku and a symbol of Azerbaijan, the land of fire. At Yanar Dag, the site from which they originated, a fire has been burning for thousands of years. This is because the Absheron Peninsula, where Baku is located, is a world-class site for oil and natural gas reserves. Large-scale oil wells still remain in the oil fields near Baku, which sparked the oil boom in the past. What is unique is that oil fields and villages are intermingled, with wells openly pumping up oil right in residential areas! It is an astonishing sight that makes the joke about finding oil if you dig the ground to repair a toilet feel real. Realizing the reputation of Azerbaijan, the Land of Fire, once again, I head to Guba, a mountainous city in the northeast. The market in this city, nestled in pristine nature, has a truly unique atmosphere. Fruits picked from front yards, flower petals, and homemade yogurt catch the eye. Following a savory aroma wafting from somewhere, I encounter traditional snacks! From Bükmə, a traditional Guba pastry that looks like layers of folded netting, to Paxlava, filled with nuts and honey between thin, crispy dough, I momentarily set aside my blood sugar concerns and enjoy the sweetness of Azerbaijan. After recharging with sugar, I head to Khinaliq, a high-altitude village nestled in the Greater Caucasus Mountains. A spectacular sight awaits on the way to the village! Literally endless flocks of sheep appear. It is said that 300,000 sheep travel approximately 200 km annually; this is a migratory procession of herds moving in search of pastures every season. Hearing rumors that there are traveling shepherds nearby, I set out to meet them. Across gravel fields and a river, I arrived at the shepherds' temporary resting place. Becoming a novice shepherd, I experience the life of a Hnalik shepherd. Upon arrival, I try on the shepherds' clothing offered as a welcome gesture. The Yaponzi, made from the grain of ten sheep, is both a waterproof garment and a blanket for the shepherds. Why did Mr. Choi Su-gil puff out his chest after trying on the Yaponzi? Next, I reach Hnalik, a village situated close to the sky. I encounter the traditional culture of the Hnalik people that they have preserved for centuries, and climb to the highest point of the village to take in the scenery of the Caucasus.
