  The whole dry, cracked skin thing alone would have driven me completely crazy. A dry foot has driven me from my sleep in search of lotion more than once.<br><br>Edited to add: There&apos;s an undeniable sense of impending doom when you&apos;re sick like this. They were afraid until they began to actively die. That&apos;s how you know you&apos;re in real trouble. The pain stops. The fear stops. It&apos;s just... gone. If you&apos;re lucky, you wake up on a ventilator and spend the best part of the next year trying to regain your strength. If you&apos;re unlucky, it takes too long to die.

  I’m a banker on my lunch break in Gulf Breeze, FL 11:50am. &nbsp;I started listening on my way to sleep but I enjoy the stories so much that I listen during the day.

  The soft narration makes the horror of smallpox in the Renaissance feel even more surreal 😔 History doesn&apos;t need monsters, reality was terrifying enough. Thank you for telling these stories that history often forgets.
