Can really see and hear the darkness. The depths of his despair.

I’ve never heard a public figure, let alone Richard Burton, talk about alcoholism so openly and eloquently. This was something else.

Dick Cavett is an authentic person that brings out the true essence of his guests.
Richard Burton was always raw with Cavett and it’s a treasure to revisit these gentleman exchanging their stories.
Both struggled with their own demons and I only find humanity and lessons listening to them.

bless that audience for not falling for the hatchet job. that's honestly beautiful. also, what he says about trying to do as much as he can with as little physical effort as possible captures perfectly for me what he did in 1984. it's the most terrifying performance i've ever seen any actor deliver. his o'brien was scarier than the book's. i've never seen anything like it before or since. it's only possible because he is so self-possessed that it convinces you effortlessly of his unfathomable control and power over winston, and anyone else he happens to have caught in his trap. you never see the machinery of the party. you only see him. so whoever plays it needs to convince you that the entire power of the party is present in one person. and he manages to do that.

Yes you can see the toll his drinking has taken on his face over many years. No judgement here only compassion.

A cliché, but true-he had the soul of a poet. RIP.

The segment is about booze and its dark side, not fame. Better to label it honestly…but whoever “writes” these (AI? human?) enjoys the dishonesty, including the invention of a feud between Kirk Douglas and John Wayne.
