Back in 1975, a friend and I were driving from Houston to Surfside Beach, Texas, for a surfing trip when a car pulled up beside us, honking for us to stop. We pulled over and discovered we had a busted water pump hose. The driver, a friendly guy in an old Dodge sedan with push-button gears, offered us a ride to the next town. A tuxedo hung in the back seat, and he mentioned he was headed to a hockey game as a guest of Gordie Howe.

During the ride, he realized we were broke. When we arrived at a small-town gas station, we thanked him for the lift and for pointing out our car trouble. Before leaving, he reached into his pocket, handed us twenty bucks, and said, "Compliments of ZZ Top." We had no idea what that meant.

We went surfing as planned, but when I got home, I pulled out my ZZ Top albums—and there he was. The guy who had given us a ride was Billy Gibbons. 🎸

I rented a car 🚗 grabbed my ticket 🎟 and drove down to the south bay to Saratoga Winery 🍷 in 2014. The show was:
Jeff Beck & Z.Z. Top !

In a beautiful Amphitheater still light out, Jeff played a phenomenal set of instrumental blues, rock, jazz, and vocal tunes.
Night 🌙 🌃 fell, and Z.Z. took to the stage and burned 🔥 the house down, figuratively speaking! 🔊Later on, Mr. Beck 🎸 joined the boys, and they proceeded to finish us off. 🥁 🕉

I'm Houston born and raised in the Memorial area. My first daytime concert was Billy and ZZ Top at the Houston Astrodome parking lot under a huge tent in the 70s. My older sister got to see Billy jamming in his garage in Tanglewood when she and her friend would walk the neighborhood. Lots of other stories, too, about Billy and Dusty that bring back lots of great memories. He, they, are such an important part of my life's musical journey ... Love you, Billy! R.I.P., Dusty! Thank you for posting this video...

Hearing Billy Gibbons talk about opening for Hendrix and the Texas blues scene is like a masterclass in rock history.

...first time here....so damn awesome....I look forward to seeing more schaffer interviews....wonderful......I'm 67, I've seen two three-piece bands that were otherworldly......the police and zz top....I think in the 80s.....sometimes, the simplicity of a three-piece can overwhelm you.....what really stands out.....if I'm honest.......sting's vocals....and the drums and guitar wonderful, too, second......and.....of course......gibbons.........thanks paul for helping us see how the music happened.....we like that history.......
