My friend is a historian for one of Washington states tribes, and he’s provided a lot of context for this war, which was broken treaties, encroachment of settlers, and existing political divisions within local tribes. It’s interesting as a Washington native to see the admiration we give to chief Seattle, when his fellow Duwamish (now part of the Muckleshoot tribes) view him as a sell out who sold his people for higher standing and political maneuvering. We call this war the “puget sound war”, a lot of our local tribes call it “the first treaty war”, the second wouldn’t be until over a 100 years later with what we call “the fish war”, where a number of treaty tribes fought for their treaty rights and it concluded with the Boldt Supreme Court decision and co-management of fisheries and other natural resources between treaty tribes and the Washington State government
