NEVER Pull the Battery When Your Smoke Alarm Chirps — Do This Instead

If your smoke alarm beeping at night woke you up, mija, do not pull the battery. Leave it in, test the alarm from the floor, and get the battery changed in the morning. NFPA says nearly three out of five people who died in a home fire were in a home with no smoke alarm, or with one that did not sound, and that the most common reason an alarm did not sound was the power: a battery missing, taken out, or dead. They also write that even careful people may disable an alarm that starts chirping in the middle of the night. That is the whole reason for this video: a smoke alarm beeping in the dark is the moment people make the one mistake that matters. Tonight I show you what a smoke alarm beeping once every thirty or sixty seconds is actually asking for, why an alarm can still chirp with a brand-new battery in it, how I test an alarm on the ceiling with the end of a broom handle while both feet stay on the floor, and the date printed on the back that almost nobody reads. We also go through the two kinds of alarms: the one with a battery you replace every year, and the sealed ten-year one you never open. If the smoke alarm beeping is coming from a sealed ten-year alarm, the whole unit gets replaced, and I show you why buying another battery will not help. Then the carbon monoxide alarm: where it goes, how to test it, and what to do the moment it sounds. Fresh air first, count everyone, call nine-one-one from outside, and stay there. Nobody ever stood in your hallway and explained any of this, so none of it is your fault. My mother cleaned other people's houses in Puebla. One night a smoke alarm chirped there, and a man pulled the battery out and left it on the dining table. She put it back in his wife's hand and said a quiet alarm is not guarding anyone. I am sixty now, and I understand her. Anything on a ladder, taking an alarm down, putting a new one up: that goes to a son, a daughter, or a neighbor. Any alarm with a wire into the ceiling goes to a qualified electrician. Testing an alarm with a broom handle, writing the dates on the kitchen calendar, and the rule about never pressing hush when there is real smoke are my own household habits, not agency advice. I am not a firefighter or an electrician, and I sell nothing. Follow the booklet that came with your own alarm, because models differ. If you are not sure whether a sound is a trouble signal or a real alarm, get everyone outside and call nine-one-one from fresh air. #smokealarmbeeping #smokedetector #carbonmonoxide #homesafety #mexicanhometips
