Episode 47 - Passenger or Driver? The Psychology of Agency — Taking the Wheel of Your Own Life

In your life right now — are you the driver, or are you the passenger? It sounds like a simple question. But if you answer it honestly — across your career, your relationships, your finances, your daily choices — the answer is often more complicated than we'd like to admit. In this episode of The Better Humans Project Podcast, host Greg Pfeiffer explores one of the most fundamental concepts in psychology: agency. The capacity to act, to choose, and to be the genuine author of your own life — rather than being carried along by it. What you'll explore in this episode: ✦ What agency actually is — and its four distinct dimensions: choice, action, interpretation, and relational agency ✦ Albert Bandura's self-efficacy research and why your belief in your own capacity to act is as powerful as the capacity itself ✦ Seligman's learned helplessness — the disturbing research that showed how passivity is learned, and what it takes to unlearn it ✦ Viktor Frankl's insight from Auschwitz: even in the most constrained circumstances, the agency of meaning-making cannot be taken away ✦ The four ways self-efficacy — and agency — can be deliberately built ✦ The dangers of too much agency: Ellen Langer's illusion of control, the exhaustion of hyper-agency, and the moral hazard of ignoring structural inequality ✦ Julian Rotter's internal vs external locus of control — and why an external locus is sometimes an accurate reading of your situation, not a cognitive error ✦ Can some people genuinely thrive with less agency? The answer — and the crucial distinction between chosen surrender and imposed helplessness ✦ How agency fluctuates across a lifetime — and Susan Kobasa's research on psychological hardiness ✦ The Stoic paradox: Epictetus, born a slave, and the deepest possible form of agency ✦ This week's challenge: the five-day Agency Audit The free companion worksheet is linked below — it includes an Agency Across Life Areas grid, a self-rating section, a five-day challenge journal, and closing reflection questions. ───────────────────────────────────── ABOUT THE BETTER HUMANS PROJECT ───────────────────────────────────── The Better Humans Project is a podcast about the ongoing work of becoming more self-aware, more present, and more fully alive — through psychology, science, philosophy, and honest conversation.
