In dwelt yet not full as Piper stated is perfectly understandable in my humble opinion.

I truly enjoyed hearing another tradition discussing the filling & the indwelling of the Spirit.

Lord, may we not quench or grieve the Spirit. Help us to keep in step. To keep bearing fruit. To keep beholding and being transformed from one degree of glory to the next in Jesus name, amen. May we not fall away may we keep in step with repentance turning from sin and turning to Christ.

JP is talking about "filling with the HS" as if one is filling a pitcher of water. The pitcher is empty, half empty, full. That is not how I see the meaning of "filled with the HS" . Kevin is absolutely right.

39:15 - John Piper presses into what it means for God to grieve. Kevin DeYoung answers that it is an anthopopathism and right when he was about to finish the sentence saying "it describes . . ." then he went to 1 Samuel 15 and God repenting. From there John Piper affirms everything DeYoung says and then rightly insists that we must go beyond labeling the grief or repentance or anger or sadness as an anthopopathism, we must identify the reality to which the biblical anthropopathism is pointing to while guarding from the error of thinking that God grieves or is angry or sad or regrets or repents like a finite human does. I thank God for this exchange and John putting his finger on what still needs to be said after explaining the biblical doctrines of divine impassibility and anthropopathisms.

Can you tell Kevin and panel that there is a distinction between indwelling and filling. All Christians are indwelt, not all Christians at all times are filled. It is an ongoing command because we don't always obey.

For clarity: Piper DOES believe in impassibility: he's endorsed Rob Lister's "God is Impassible and Impassioned", even defending that view of a God with analogous emotions as consistent with historic Christianity & Church Fathers... just not a hard impassibility making God's "delight" or "grief" or other analogous emotion/affection no different than OBVIOUS interpretive metaphors of physical divine descriptions e.g. DeYoung's "white hair" and "fire-eyes". Discerning original readers understood those as obvious metaphors, pointing to something else entirely RATHER THAN substantive dispositions of the One described with analagous similarity to us made in His image. God's emotions are incessantly described, and EMPHASIZED from Gen to Revelation, as opposed to repeated declarations since Deut 4:12 (intensified in the NT) of his nonphysical nature:... at the end of this clip: the answer HARD impassibilists give Piper denying ANY possibility of an "element of grief" is not Scripture but oft their erroneous assumption that it's utterly illogical for 'grief' or 'anger' for an all powerful deity doing whatever He wills, or for others an impossibility for One simultaneously of "infinite/transcendent bliss-blessedness" or "satisfaction" or "peace" from his transcendent state... that assumption is not even true of finite humans, who can be "sorrowful, yet always rejoicing", holding two emotions at the same time... a human good judge or military sniper being simultaneously rationally joyful and sorrowful at executing a just death/penalty to a murderer alongside loss of life, or paying good money to "enjoy" being "sad" at a meaningful tragedy... we are more complex than such simplistic logic or intuition, how much more so a higher more infinitely noble being, as common sense ought to tell us in line with our sensus divinitatis, even without God being so clear in His Word to my reading. This is analogous to many of my fellow Calvinists who do not understand the basic logic and consistency of true contingency and total divine sovereignty (compatabilism) e.g. not thinking our prayer actually "changes things" and that God CAN respond to us without violating total sovereignty of his eternal decree wherein he does whatever he PLEASES ordaining both means and ends consistent with revealing his suprarational marvelous character. He ordains, and "enjoys", his evaluations and incomprehensible yet truly revealed in important ways, ordained true "responses" to people and events in our time-bound finite world (almost heresy to many hard classical theologians. Emotional impassibility is arguably far more MORE consistent with Presbyterian theologians in history than the currently ascendant hard classical views of the past 15-20 years among among Reformed evangelicals (e.g. see the 19th Century Princeton theologians).

I can see evidence that being a successful church leader doesn’t require a living relationship with a triune God. Being smart and motivated can put you high in a dead orthodoxy.

Its funny to call the conference word+spirit when half your panel thinks they are the same thing. 😢
