How to Get Your Cats to Stop... Everything You Hate: Every No Needs a Yes!

I think part of the problem that people have with their cats is not understanding them as fur people. I've noticed over the years that they really are hooked on routines and know whent something is supposed to take place. Every evening at 10:00 pm, I take medication and give them their Temptations cat treats. If i'm busy and don't get up from my desk right away, they come to my room and rub against me then walk to the doorway and wait. When I get up, they follow me downstairs to the kitchen and wait patiently for their treats.

My new shelter cat Panda ( I call him Sagebreeze ) used to bite and lick the cords for the computer. I tried "no, Sage" at the beginning. Then remembered we have an old useless laptop that was given to us. I plugged it in and placed it in my husband's chair next to the computer. The first day I had to coax him to lay on it the second day he went there without coaxing. A win for both of us. I don't have to worry about fried cat. And he's warm and happy.

I made a short timestamp summary so everyone can easily find the parts they want to revisit. This morning, while sitting in the kitchen watching my cat jump onto the counter, the idea that “every NO needs a YES” really stood out to me: instead of simply stopping your cat, give them a better option.
1. 01:26 – Every No Needs a Yes: Don’t just say no—offer a better choice
2. 03:33 – The Counter: Give your cat a high perch near the kitchen
3. 05:29 – The Couch: Put a scratching post right where they like to scratch
4. 07:39 – The Door: Create a safe “greeting spot” away from the door
5. 08:58 – The 4 A.M. Wake-Up: Play and feed before bedtime
6. 10:41 – The Chaos: Burn off energy with play and food puzzles
7. 12:02 – Peeing Outside the Box: It may be a cry for help, not revenge
Personally, 12:02 stayed with me the most. Some behaviors that frustrate us may actually be our cat’s only way of telling us something is wrong.
I summarized this to help other seniors follow along more easily. Maybe the goal isn’t to make our cats “behave better,” but to understand what they’re trying to tell us. Wishing everyone good health, peace, and many gentle days with your cats.

I don't have a counter problem. Deja will jump up but it's not a constant thing, but I really don't care if she does. She does like to scratch the couch. What I did is buy huge comforters and lay it over. She has large scratch poles and likes those. I just have toppers on my windows not curtains. I had a cat named Diva who would like to sneak out the door to eat grass. She would notice mommy gets upset and tries to catch her. Then she would let me catch her. She could have easily got away from me if she wanted to. I didn't want her getting into the road which terrified me. When Deja wakes me up, she want's to be petted. It's usually about five in the morning. She doesn't do anything I could say I hate.

Or two boys Binx, black cat Pipi ,black and white tuxedo have their own counter space away from food and cooking. We placed their food and water on that counter. It has access to the big window and being able to see what we are doing in the kitchen. We also use sticky paper that has kept them off everything we don’t want them on. It really works. We also have cat trees on each level of the house and scratch blocks in every room. Happy cats happy cat parents 😹😻😽😸😺

The younger of my two rescue cats has decided he is in charge of determining when lunch to be served. The only problem is he’s been earlier every day! The other older cat is the one that scratches on EVERYTHING. Couch, kitchen cabinets, etc. I’m surprised he doesn’t think his name is Don’t.

Our tuxedo cat Pipi loves to play fetch but only with my husband. If anyone else try’s he just watches the toy and looks at the person😹😹😹😹

Hannah Banana is completely unfazed by foil under foot and, of course she plays with sticky tape. She is quite good at manipulating objects by using her paws and mouth together. Hannah gets so much positive reinforcement. Not that I always feel like it. Sometimes I go in my room and shut the door 😬

Thank you! My cat started waking me up in the middle of the night when we moved and I thought it was because in our former location she got a treat in the early morning, about 6:30. Duh! I did noticed that if I pulled the blankets over my head and ignored her she would eventually go away, but I felt guilty about that. So, I am awakened every night between 1:00 am and 3:00 am with the cat nose in my face and cat claws if that doesn't work. Tonight I will forget the guilt and go back to pulling the blanket, or something stronger, over my head and wait it out. I know it may take some time.

Everytime my toms Hershey, Hotspot and Shadow suffer attacks from a neighbor tom and get badly beaten, they would always urinate outside the box places in the house. But after recovery from the trauma, they would be back to using the sand box.
