I do wonder how Killua carries around 110lb yoyos in his gym shorts without them falling down

His family said he was most talented Zoldyck ever existed, so they were simply scared of teaching him nen as he would have become too powerful for them keep him under control.

When I first got in to HxH, in order to help me remember his name, I referred to Killua as kiloWatt. Imagine my surprise when Greed Island rolled around and suddenly he was wielding lightning as proficiently as Palpatine.

Killua is definitely best boy. His chocolate robots scene convinced me when I first saw it.

"Killua has been molded to be a perfect Nen candidate from birth"

True. His skills with electricity are unheard of for his age.

I’m honestly nervous of how strong/scary Killua will be as an adult.

"that sort of brute force approach really isn't favoured in the nen art form"
[laughs in chimera ant]

I was one of the people wondering why Kalluto learned nen at a younger age than Killua, but given his talent for it and his rebellious attitude towards his family, it makes sense that his parents didn't let Killua learn about nen early on. Imagine him running away from home with abilities like godspeed or full-on zetsu.

Killiua is one of the few characters in this anime who is able to kill most enemies even nen users without nen his speed and strength alone are near superhuman do to his assassin training

Things to remember about Killua:

1) He’s practically a beginner
He’s been practicing nen for less than 2 years. His first teacher gave him a half assed explanation and an intro, bisky taught him the basics, and I guess you can say he’s picked up things from Kite and other users. But besides that he has had ZERO help. He had to figure out his hatsu by himself, all the techniques he has were made up on his own often on the fly (like whirlwind) unlike Kite or Kurapika and others who had masters that (while they didn’t explicitly tell them what to choose) asked leading questions on what abilities they thought they would need and how by doing this or not doing that, they could optimize their nen. His instincts are at a level that he leaves others stunned at his proficiency (even pro hunters with decades of experience). His lack of versatility and aura output are from his lack of time to practice train and plan out what he could do with it. With more time he could easily come up with a number of abilities and increase his aura.

2) His growth rate is staggering
He is still a boy yet has passed by hundreds of adults that know nen. As stated above he has even surprised star hunters with his capabilities. Part of this stems from his upbringing, where his strength, speed, senses etc. were already at superhuman levels yet even still, his application of nen at such a young age allows him to be considered an asset rather than a liability on missions like the elimination of the ants or confronting some of the top members of the Zoldyck staff + Illumi while in charge of caring for his sister. He went from not knowing nen to figuring out the basics with a half assed explanation to developing his hatsu within a few days (of which is a particularly difficult feat even if he had YEARS of experience). From there in GI with bisky’s training he quickly adopted nen into fighting form, applied his knowledge in conjunction with others to an INSANELY efficient degree (which bisky mentioned she hadn’t reached that level until her 20’s), took on an adept nen-using adult solo (with injured hands) where he again came up with techniques on his own to maximize his minuscule aura output and was able to apply it in actual combat. By the time of the ant arc he’s able to raise his ren output exponentially to the point that he had the potential to fight an opponent on par with Kite within the timeframe of a single month. After losing Illumi’s needle, his mental hurdle gone, he sees further growth easily dispatching soldier ants. Rammot pre-nen was already physically stronger than Gon or Killua due to his physical makeup and even as a nen enhancer Killua beheads him proving that he had surpassed him despite A) being physically weaker and B) having less aura output than said ant. During the invasion he destroys multiple ants and while it couldn’t yet be called ‘en’ he was able to understand the fundamentals of the technique after only hearing about it once in person via Kite. While it is tough to measure Kite against Shoot or Knuckle we can assume they are of a similar level given both Gon and Killua’s estimation of knuckle’s fighting/physical abilities yet it took both Shoot and Knuckle to take down his corpse (albeit their motivations were different in that they were trying to preserve him while kite’s corpse was just a killer puppet). A better measuring stick would be the royal guards as Kite was only able to superficially wound Pitou yet Killua was able to cause damage to the monstrous yupi and obliterate a pouf clone. In summation, within a very short time frame Killua went from nothing to a nen-user nearly at Kite’s level and with more time should easily surpass that.

3) The feats he has performed thus far are extraordinary
Without trying to repeat myself too much, I think it is worth highlighting Killua’s achievements given A) his lack of experience and B) the small time frame he achieved it in. Things like instantly using Ten, learning Gyo in a single evening, learning zetsu just by observing Gon, confronting the Phantom Troupe and coming out unscathed (some of the world’s strongest nen users we have seen) developing his hatsu without any leads (beating hundreds of other nen candidates), beating a serial killer in a single evening (albeit when he was injured) then reaching a point where he could defeat him 1v1 in a matter of days, fighting equally with Gon who naturally has more aura and is an an enhancer, clearing most of the game in a ridiculously short period of time (when it took star hunters decades) and surpassing most of the other top groups in nen despite them being adults with years of experience, having better basics than a star hunter, achieving efficiency in output that took bisky until her 20’s to reach, defeating an adept killer with more nen while injured and using untested abilities, fighting soldier ants while still a novice and coming out unscathed, turning into a kite level opponent with the aura reserves to match within 30 days, coming up with an ability similar to en almost instinctually, developing techniques in the midst of a one-sided battle that would have killed almost anyone else, surviving battles with beasts that surpass netero in aura and causing damage to them, enhancing his natural strength to 4 times what it was in little over a year, and even escaping from top butlers with substantial experience that they Zoldycks consider reliable enough to depend upon.

Despite little direction and training compared to adults (with leagues more in both AND years of experience and time to develop) Killua can be considered a better nen user than most seen in the series and within the hunter association probably mid-level. With time and a little thought given to what his abilities could do for him his potential is on par with the likes of Silva Zeno and perhaps even surpass them to reach a level like adult Gon when he fully masters himself. With time he might add to his abilities further by utilizing skills outside transmutation like conjuration as he has already demonstrated proficiency in enhancement to the point where he could knockout an enraged Gon despite the amount of aura he produced. I think while you accurately described him as not being top tier currently, you may have undersold his potential given my previous points.
