For those interested in traditional Japanese architecture, DIY renovation, or sustainable living practices, Hitoshi's channel is a compelling and amazing resource.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvwq3Dh6t-TadXEDB3igd_w

I had high hopes at the start as he seemed skilled and the subtleties spoke of the importance of the wood frame, then he sanded the beautiful beams, oh good , thought I…..my horror when painted every single bit of wood, the only ‘wood’ left visible is the fake wood lion floor, the laminated fake wood kitchen cabinets…..what a disaster.

He was very thorough in obliterating any traditional character, painting the lovely beams, covering the parquet floor, blocking in the traditional Japanese sliding screens. I wish I hadn’t watched, it bruised my soul.

Even I, a foreigner, was very scared when he covered the tatami with linoleum!

All good except the painting of that beautiful wood white! Seal coating it would have been my choice.

OMG he painted over all that beautiful timber!! What nay people do not realise is that exposed timber filters air naturally inside the house!

I’ve heard that many people freeze to death in Japan during the winter, so it’s a shame that the importance of window frames is underestimated despite that. It’s disappointing that I haven’t seen a single person replacing their window frames in any of the renovation videos I’ve seen from Japan.
