Bernadette! I'm italian and I did go to the Mani di fata'site to contact them about the purchase of linen and they told me that they in fact still sell linen but not directly on the site anymore, but if you contact them on their business phone number or maybe in person they still sell. Hope this is helpful and sorry about my English
edit: i want to add that they confirm that you can order and pay only by the phone number and not in person

There is a very experienced weaver who runs a shop in my town and I was speaking with her about my woes with a linen skirt I had thrifted that was literally disintegrating and even as I was trying to mend it, where I was mending it was making even more holes. She said that historical linens lasted so long, could even be heirlooms, because the flax plants and thus the bast fibers were often 2-3 feet long and were not chemically processed whereas flax for linen today has been bred for speed of growth to harvest and so commercial flax for fiber only grows to about 18ā€ and then is modern-chemically processed which causes even further damage (and thus also more shortening) to the fibers which then creates subpar fabrics that only last a year or two of wear and wash.

I’m a professional hand weaver specializing in reproduction fabric. I take this video as a challenge to weave proper linen šŸ˜‚ (literally watching this while weaving fabric for a Greek chiton)

Me, buying vintage and antique linen tablecloths and curtains cause it's cheaper and better than modern linen for clothes and garb: "You had my curiosity. Now you have my attention."

I have linen pillowcases that my Italian grandma made in the late 40s when she married. She used them, then passed them on to my mum, and now I have them. They wash EXCELLENTLY and they are fabulous after all these years! Thick, durable, very cool in the summer. And my grandma embroidered her tiny initials on them. I am very emotionally attached to them ā¤

LIVING IN BULGARIA I have access to a lot of new old stock fabrics from the old socialist days, made on what would have been classed as "outdated machinery" - the quality is a hundred times better than modern cloth

The weave is always MUCH tighter - the yarn form a tight S over and under each other [as you can see in the historical linen she has here, not a vague wavy way, and it DRAPES is a totally different way. Thankfully, there are still hundreds of Babas with cupboards full of cloth they hoarded that they are selling online or their kids are selling when they pass away. Also the GSM/OZ is way higher, a cloth that is physically quite thin can weigh a ton, there is just SO much more physical material in the weave, the yarn is spun tighter and the weave is packed way tighter.

When I found out that many modern linen manufacturers cut the linen fibers into short lengths so they can use cotton machinery to process it, a part of me died that has never come back to life

Interesting fact: I ran into the same issue and found really good quality linen in a few south indian hand-woven dhoti manufacturers! Dhotis are meant to be worn, (ab)used, and washed every day, so they're made to stand up to a LOT of wear and tear. Most are made out of cotton, but there's enough demand for linen dhotis that I was able to find this resource.

Just last night I went to a garden show and while perusing seeds, including flax, a heard an older woman talking about how here in Oregon we used to grow flax and had a thriving "European Quality" linen industry. When someone asked what happened, she said "the fifties." So now I'm going to grow flax.
