Before watching this video, I never realised that The Nutcracker WAS a story. I only knew the Nutcracker March and The Sugar Plum Fairy.

Yep, Disney definitely dropped the ball on this one. I remember a few people saying that this was supposed to be a sequel to the original story but if that’s the case you’re looking at a Pinocchio and the Empire of the Night level of disconnect and plot holes.

I've been researching "The Nutcracker and the Mouseking" ever since I was twelve, (so it's been a little over ten years now,) but have loved it for as long as I can remember. The instant you said that'd we'd go back to its roots, I held my breath, because I've watched too many videos where they've credited Petipa or Dumas instead.
The version of the ballet you show at around 7:38 is the Vaganova version, correct? I really like the version preformed by The Royal Opera House, as it does show that Drosselmeyer and the Nutcracker are close.
And "The Nutcracker Prince" is my favorite adaptation! I just wish that the animation matched the quality of the script.
I think that Disney's visuals would have worked perfectly for a more loyal adaptation of the story if we restrained the real world (because Drosselmeyer's house is beautiful and elegant and way too fancy) It's got a perfect balance of wonder, beauty, color, and darkness.
The most horrible version of The Nutcracker I've found, though, is Claire Legrand's "Winterspell." It is entirely devoid of magic and charm.
