Btw guys. DO NOT WATCH THEIR WATERLOO VIDEO.

It's Epic History's first video EVER. It's super dated and honestly isn't great. However, they recently said they are remaking their Waterloo Campaign series, a 4 Part series, the first video of which will come out in March.

After you finish the 1814 video, you can take a break from Napoleon, and wait for the series to come out. Historically it might actually be quite thematic, as it sorta represents the break in events between his first abdication and his return from Exile. So you are "waiting for his return" in a way.

The Kremlin is a fortress that is surrounded by stone walls, and no other buildings adjacent to it, it is pretty imperious to fire.

Kremlin is a fortress complex that was built and expanded over centuries, old constructions were removed or renovated, and new ones built, gradually the complex grew. Some buildings are as old as late 15th century, some parts of buildings are dated to late 14th, some buildings were constructed in USSR. TY for reactions!

One of the most devastating stories from the retreat is reading about a wagon full of wounded men which had been abandoned by the driver, who had taken the horses, stranded on the side of the road begging the passing troops to take them with them and not leave them for the Russians. None of the thousands of soldiers who passed them tried to help and the man who wrote it in his memoirs said the heart-rending cries for aid would haunt him till the day he died.

Comment on the Admiral question, marines and the like can be detatched for use in typical military action, especially in desperate situations.

34:12 this and two quotes you will see in a later episodes solidify how soldiers viewed Napoleon. They would go to any and all extremes for him. Only a few leaders in history have achieved such a feat.

There’s a quote from one of Napoleon soldiers diaries and he says something like … “I’ve been all over the world conquering beautiful cities “mentioning many like Paris … Egypt , Spain but MOSCOW was the most beautiful awe inspiring place he had ever seen.

It was early 19th century, dying for your country or monarch was a thing back then. Honor, duty and glory weren't vain words. People need to realise, they didn't have our mentality, people would challenge each other to a duel if their honor was insulted. A world at war, was a normal world to them. There was no long peace like we know in our time. Every generation had experienced its own wars, French society at the time was very militarized in its customs.

I watched a documentary about a Russian soldier's journal during the invasion and retreat from Moscow. I found it interesting that even they had some pity on retreating stragglers. He mentions that one evening they let a freezing French straggler share their campfire so that he could warm up his frozen rat meat. He ate it and then died by the fire minutes after

Napoleon and his foreign minister, General of Division the Marquis De Caulaincourt, left the Army on December 5th. Throughout the campaign, Caulaincourt had repeatedly objected to advancing further into Russia and to wintering at Moscow, and refused to go to St Petersburg to negotiate with the Tsar, knowing no negotiation would be made while the French were in Moscow, and warned Napoleon repeatedly about staying too long in the city. His own brother was killed at Borodino.

During the retreat, Napoleon wanted to stop at Marie Walewska's estate. Calaincourt was disgusted and surprised, shocked that the Emperor would make such a suggestion after deserting his destroyed army. At the same time, the ragged survivors, led by his stepson and the Marshals, pushed on to Poland. They urged Napoleon to go immediately to Paris to address the political fallout from the campaign and the nation's morale, amid widespread civilian shock and outrage, while rebuilding the army anew, scraping the bottom of the barrel.
