Steffen Peters: The Six-Time Olympian on the Dark Place Behind the Medals (Part 1)

The dark place he reached in 2018–2019, when he watched a video of his own winning ride in Las Vegas and did not believe the rider was him. The three things that pulled him out: understanding the mechanism of anxiety, physical exercise in moderation, and radical acceptance. Why he now gives himself exactly thirty minutes with a bad ride, then sets it down. The cold-plunge-and-sauna routine he reached for when twenty-five doctors couldn't touch the neuropathy. Why he'd rather be "the rave horse" guy in an airport than hear his own name. The Dr. Klimke story he didn't learn the truth of for five years. How he tells nervousness apart from anxiety at the gate — and why chasing "not nervous" made it worse.
