RIP Brent Hinds. His guitar style was a MAJOR influence to how Mastodon shaped their sound in such a unique way. He was primarily from the background of bluegrass and fingerpicking. Thats why you hear so many of the pull-offs to open strings. If you listen to them through that lens, you realize it so much more. He was one of a kind

One of those rare albums that can only be described as perfect. 12/10.

Bill Kelliher is one of the most slept on riff writers in the game. Also you asked about tunings, they use several that I'm aware of - D standard, Drop C, and AGCFAD.

Man its so bittersweet ( as a 20 year fan) to see someone new to the band fall so in love with the masterwork of Brent Hinds. RIP BH.

Leviathan gotta make it into his ears at some point.

Yes it's got harsh vocals but not as harsh as Gojira, which he was still able to appreciate anyways. Aside from that minor nitpick, its tons of what Walt likes - proggy, concept album, groove, heavy riffs, great solos. My personal favorite, was lucky enough to see them on tour w/ Lamb of God in 2024 where they played the whole thing as part of its 20th anniversary celebration

the drums on this album are just mental. 3 bar drum fills... I'm good with that. :-) unsettling fact is that the lyrics on the 1st track are a true story.
