Truth is Hunters wife didn’t want him as a T.V. star seeing him as film star material.
It didn’t help that Paramount/Desilu dithered over Star Trek and wanted a second, less cerebral, pilot…
Anyway Bill was the better choice as the chemistry between the leading characters wasn’t there in the initial pilot.

Star Trek would not have been STAR TREK without William Shatner 's Kirk! Bill brought his sense of humor to the role that Jeff Hunter seemed to lack. He also had an instant rapport with Leonard Nimoy that lasted the rest of Leonard's life.
With Pike as Captain, I think the show would have lasted 13 weeks at the most.

William Shatner brought Star Trek to life. His portrayal was warm, humorous and yet serious when he needed to be the leader making the final decisions. It was also the chemistry between Kirk, Spock and McCoy that made it like the family Kirk said in a later film.

In editing this documentary, it would have been nice if the screen showed the actors in their roles to match the dialogue.

Finally, Jeffrey Hunter was cold in the first pilot. He was an attractive actor but he seemed more of a loner than part of a team. Star Trek was successful because there was teamwork.

One actor, other than Nimoy, made it into TOS. That was Majel Barrett, who played "Number One", in the cage. She became Nurse Christine Chapel, the voice of all Federation computers, and...Mrs. Gene Roddenberry

 1) Give a hyperbolic clickbait title.
2) Regurgitate common knowledge, but keep teasing about "secret knowledge."
3) Repeat step 2 until viewers are ready to puke.
4) Offer up some half-baked theories.
5) Fake surprise when you get a bunch of thumbs-down.

To put it simply, Jeffrey Hunter's wife/widow wanted to be married to an A-list movie star, NOT a lowly television actor. As such, she wasn't going to let anything stand in the way of her dream!

This would be far more engaging if the audio track was even moderately in synch with the video scenes instead of the random non-sequential mish-mash of clips presented.

Now Shatner is working for Prometheus Entertainment and narrates videos on History Channel.

His complicated marriage, could've killed the show entirely. The facts that Captain Pike isn't spoken of as much as Capt. Kirk, Picard, Janeway, Cisco and others shows it was a blessing in disguise.

No one could play a lead like William Shatner.
